Yesterday at the Montclair State U | Entrepreneurship & Innovation New Jersey Small Business Summit Montclair State University was such an inspiring day! I attended last year, but this year’s pitch competition made it even more special. The panels were insightful, I loved seeing a few of my entrepreneur-friends, and I met so many incredible small business owners.

I chose the growth table because that’s exactly where we are with our Caribbean-inspired candle and home fragrance business. I left feeling energized for what’s next! 🌴✨

Between running a business and being a competitive soccer and gymnastics mom, I’m usually planning something or rushing somewhere. This year, all I wanted was a birthday that felt easy and unhurried, and I couldn’t have asked for a better day.

Spending my birthday with family, friends, and loved ones has been so special. Whether you celebrated with me in person, called, messaged, or sent a text, thank you for making me feel so loved.

And to our customers who voted in the poll for me to light our Caribbean-inspired Coconut Dream candle, you made this moment even sweeter. It’s glowing with me in this photo, and I couldn’t have picked a better birthday candle.

Spending my birthday weekend at Mary’s Place by the Sea, supporting their walk-a-thon and 5K in Ocean Grove, NJ.

Mary’s Place by the Sea offers women with all types of cancer a respite and wellness retreat home, from diagnosis through two years after treatment. It’s a space where they can step away from the responsibilities of being a mother, daughter, sister, spouse, or caregiver and simply have time for themselves.

Our vendor fee is a donation to support that mission. I hadn’t planned to come out this weekend, but the intention behind this event made being here feel important. I have close family and friends who are survivors as well.

To everyone navigating cancer and to every survivor: we’re here in support of you. I’m grateful to be part of this day.

Some memories begin in the kitchen. 🧡

I still think of the scent of spices and coconut drifting through the house, the sweet bread loaf filling each corner of the rooms, and someone making sure a piece was saved just for me (sometimes lol). That kind of care is part of the tradition, and part of what makes the memory feel like home.

Sweet Bread is one of the five scents in Smoke & Spice: A Road Through Caribbean Memory. Cinnamon, coconut, and raisins come together in a warm, familiar sweetness inspired by Caribbean baking traditions.

It’s my birthday week, and on October 18, I’ll be celebrating another year. But this week, I want to celebrate the community that helped bring Chaconia Candles this far. 🧡

It’s raining in New Jersey and New York today. But somewhere in the Caribbean, a coal pot is already lit.

Because a Sunday lime doesn’t begin at the table. It begins with the smoke. Before the food, before the plates, before the cousins pull up, that first curl of smoke rises and the smell finds everybody in the house. That’s how you know something good is coming.

Sunday down by the river. A big Sunday lunch slow-cooking over coals. Somebody’s speaker going and nobody in a hurry to move.

The meal is the point. The smoke is the invitation.

Coal Pot was made for exactly this: eucalyptus, cedar, smoked oak, and that earthy warmth that says come outside, sit down, stay a while.

Six years in business, and last week we held our very first customer interviews. I wish we’d done it sooner.

We heard stories about feeling connected to Caribbean culture through scent, about why the ingredients they bring into their homes matter, and about the little details we put care into, the box colors, matches, brochures, and candle care tips.

One customer told us she chooses a fragrance by its name first, then reads the scent notes to find out what it smells like. Another said that even with luxury candles, what matters to her is feeling a connection.

The biggest takeaway? Listen to your customers. What matters most to them might not be what you expected, and hearing it in their own words means everything.
