In a world filled with conflicting messages, judgmental statements and agendas prioritizing profit, and/or ego, over public health, it can be difficult to navigate your personal nutritional needs. This article is filled with insight, clarification and applicable information. Snippet preview and article link 🔗 below.

“First, I encourage people to start with assessing access, ability, and awareness — not focusing on guilt or shame,” Richard told us.

“My job as a registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN) is to meet people where they are, not where an idealized version of themselves or society thinks they ‘should’ be. We are able to translate evidence into daily, doable habits that can change the trajectory of health and enhance quality of life. Changes can be complex when considering the current landscape, pertinent health disparities, and lack of health literacy in specific populations.”

“On the other hand, when an individual is willing and able to navigate changes, it can also be quite simple to make small, but impactful changes,” she added. “I have educated clients on healthier choices available anywhere they are — from dollar stores to gas stations, fast food chains to airports, hospitals to truck stops and more.”

Another fantastic intern has successfully completed an IFN rotation 🙌 with me.

Usually interns are physically on site with me, or a combo of virtual and in-person, but Alaina’s circumstances required her to be 100% remote. Although ‘virtual-only’ comes with its challenges-with creativity, determination, innovation and flexibility, we made it happen.

Alaina Duchin, you did it, WAY TO GO! I have seen you grow, expand your awareness, and exercise your autonomy to challenge what is ‘simply accepted,’ or ‘always done that way,’ and develop a broader and deeper understanding of the ways nutrition, health and human interaction are inextricably woven together. It was a pleasure to share this time with you, learn alongside you and offer insight from my journey along the way. Thank you for your contributions and sharing your presence and personal journey with me. I wish you the very best in all your personal and professional endeavors and am here for you in any capacity I can support you further.

This may be a timely question and/or topic overheard during the weekend’s barbecues, picnics, Memorial Day festivities or maybe at the water cooler later this summer. I am often asked about the Alkaline diet and if the pH of specific foods matter.
Check out what my colleagues and I have to say about potatoes 🥔, which for many reasons, I whole-heartedly root for 😉.

Thank you Everyday Health and Brazier for including me in this piece.

Potatoes are slightly acidic, though they may have alkalizing effects. Overall, potatoes are unlikely to impact health outcomes related to pH.

“When an individual goes rogue it can be a real safety concern — so also understanding why may be necessary,” she continued. “Are they financially limited and trying to make it last longer? Do they understand the dosing instructions? Are they health literate with the possible side effects, risks or outcomes of this additional dose?”

While in the midst of updating a major presentation on plant-based diets I had to ‘stop and smell the flowers’💐
Edible flowers have long been showcased and incorporated by chefs while the functional benefits have been used and highlighted in dishes by dietitian nutritionists alike, but marigolds are having a moment (although I do love some🫛protein), and for good reason-their nutrient & protein content as well as strong food science properties. The potential for them to be saved for consumption versus being discarded (~40% are tossed after ornamental use), is a sustainable solution scientists are exploring.
Last year (May 2025) I showcased edible flowers in salads, dressings, drinks, desserts and more on Daytime Tri-Cities

Does meal timing affect health and longevity?
Check out the snippet preview & full article link 🔗 below for more info, insight and study findings.

“These study results are observational, so not proof of causation, but it fits broader chrononutrition science showing that aligning meals with daytime circadian biology supports metabolic and overall health.”
— Monique Richard, MS, RDN, LDN

“In practice, I educate and encourage strategies around meal timing as a simple, actionable lever to help all individuals — children, teens, athletes, adults, and older adults — meet protein and overall energy and nutrient needs, stabilize energy, and anchor daily routines. Meal timing and meal composition are complementary partners in our journey toward health and overall well-being,” Richard added.

Community nutrition presentations at the Healthy Aging Expo
JC, TN

We had a full, interactive, engaged group of senior citizens in our nutrition workshops. We chatted about protein needs, GLP-1s, gut health, cooking for one, grocery shopping tips, supplements, butterfly pea flower (of course!) and so much more.
Thank you Susan Lubke and Seasons Senior Services for inviting me and my dietetic intern, Bridgette! The bonus surprise was unexpectedly reconnecting with previous clients & client family members who vocalized appreciation and gratitude for previous nutrition support, let me know they watch me on tv and shared updates of how they’re doing.
