First day at Mahaska Health = DONE! 🩺❤️

And this rotation comes with a pretty big first for me…

In my nearly 20 years of nursing, I’ve never actually worked in a civilian clinic. 😳 My career has always been military clinics on bases, a deployment to Afghanistan, or the VA Hospital (which is federally run).

So now I’m learning an entirely new language: HEALTH INSURANCE. 😂

Prior authorizations. Getting medications covered. Figuring out which diagnostics insurance will approve. What’s preferred, what’s denied, what needs to be tried first… all the fun things I’ve never really had to navigate before. 🫠

Thankfully, I’m in VERY capable hands. My preceptor is truly one of the best NPs I know and basically a second mom to me. ❤️ She wasted absolutely no time today throwing me right into a variety of new and different cases — exactly what I wanted!

The next month is going to be a little wild. Mahaska is 1.5 hours from home each way, so that’s 3 hours of driving PLUS a full clinic day. 😵‍💫 I’m front-loading my clinical hours as much as possible so I can knock out my required 125 hands-on hours and make the last four weeks of the rotation a little lighter — which also means more days back in my own clinic seeing the clients I love. 💉❤️

So if my business schedule looks a little slim for the next few weeks, THIS is why. I promise there is a method to the madness!

But today? Great first day. Great patients. Lots of learning. And I’m genuinely excited for this rotation.

At this point, “fatigue” doesn’t even begin to describe it. Between school, clinicals, work, studying, and trying to function like a normal human being, I am running on caffeine, determination, and whatever is left in these syringes. 😂

So today we’re calling a little B12 + glutathione my version of self-care. 💉✨

Do I expect it to magically download everything I need to know for finals directly into my brain? No.

Would I like it to? ABSOLUTELY. 😩😂

One more week. Send caffeine, prayers, and maybe a spare brain. 🙏🏻🧠☕️

In case you’ve been wondering why I’ve been a little MIA lately… THIS is why. 😅🫠

Today I officially finished my FIRST clinical rotation! 🩺🎉
1 down. 4 to go!

As if the normal workload of NP school wasn’t enough, this was the first class where we added 125 clinical hours on top of the usual heavy coursework, assignments, studying, running a business, seeing clients, and attempting to function like a normal human being. 😂

I’m still not entirely sure how I survived it, but somehow… I DID. 🙌🏻

Now I just need to survive finals next week and keep this train on the tracks for FOUR more classes. 🚂💨😂

Prayers, caffeine, good vibes, and possibly an exorcism are all currently being accepted. 🙏🏻☕️🫠😂
