ChildServe is a not-for-profit organization that partners with families to help children with special health care needs live a great life. Originally founded in 1928 as a convalescent home for children, today ChildServe provides specialized pediatric healthcare services to nearly 5,800 children in Iowa. Through the support of private insurance, public funds, and the generosity of donors, ChildServ

e offers accessible, family-centered care unique to each child’s needs, hopes, and dreams. We provide services to children with special healthcare needs. In creating a common understanding of the term special healthcare needs, we note the term "health" is more than a medical definition or the absence of disability. Something special is growing at ChildServe – Cedar Rapids! 🌱

We're excited to share our new therapeutic garden at ChildServe – Cedar Rapids! This space will provide children with meaningful opportunities to build skills, connect with nature and grow confidence through hands-on gardening experiences. The garden features raised beds filled with fruits, vegetables and herbs that kids and staff can plant, tend to and harvest.

Kids in our Autism Day Program recently enjoyed a special farm-to-table experience using basil they helped grow. The group took part in every step of the process. From picking and washing the fresh basil to gathering ingredients, assembling caprese skewers with help from their classroom teachers and enjoying the finished product together. Along the way, they practiced valuable life skills, followed directions and experienced the rewards of growing their own food.

Hands-on activities like these create opportunities for learning, independence and confidence while making lasting memories. We're so proud of all their hard work and can't wait to see what's next in the garden!

Hannah Krause's journey with Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) began at ChildServe in the Autism Day Program and has come full circle as she now works toward becoming a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA).

After earning her bachelor's degree in Psychology from the University of Iowa, Hannah was looking for a role that would challenge her and allow her to work with children in a new way. In 2020, she joined ChildServe's Autism Day Program, a decision that sparked a passion for serving children with autism.

"My supervisor at the time, Kara Pick, encouraged me to continue pursuing the field," Hannah shared. "After I moved away, I spent the next several years working with children in the autism community and discovered ABA. Even then, no other workplace compared to ChildServe and the community I experienced here."

That realization led Hannah back to ChildServe as a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) with a clear goal: become a BCBA.

As soon as she returned, Hannah expressed interest in ChildServe’s ABA practicum program, eager to expand her knowledge and develop her clinical skills. One of her biggest takeaways has been seeing the flexibility and individuality of ABA in practice.

"ChildServe has taught me how diverse ABA can be," she said. "It's incredible to see how different approaches can be so effective for different children, helping each child reach their unique goals."

Throughout her journey, Hannah says the support from her ChildServe team has made all the difference.

"My leaders have been incredibly supportive from the time I started as an RBT through becoming a practicum student," she said. "After learning I was pregnant with my first baby, my leaders and coworkers were so understanding and supportive throughout my pregnancy and after returning from maternity leave. I couldn't have asked for a better team."

For those considering the ABA practicum program at ChildServe, Hannah offers this advice:

"Your practicum at ChildServe will teach you far more than the science and techniques of applied behavior analysis. You'll learn how to apply what you've studied in meaningful, everyday practice while growing tremendously as a professional. More importantly, it will shape you as a person. You'll develop deeper compassion and build lasting relationships with kids, families and colleagues. Those experiences will teach you lessons that no textbook ever could."

What better way to start off the new school year than with spin art, Connect 4®, games and more! 🎨 🎒

As the new school year kicks off, kids and families visiting ChildServe – Johnston had the chance to enjoy a little end-of-summer fun. The week before school started, children stopped by after their outpatient therapy appointments for games, crafts and time to unwind together.

A special thank-you to our ChildServe volunteers for helping create memorable experiences like this for the children and families we serve!

We had a BALL at our 5th annual inpatient kick back game!

Kids and young adults receiving care through our Inpatient Complex Medical Care program recently got together to play a friendly game of kickball. Both teams got creative with uniforms, with one team wearing tie-dye and one team rocking their favorite animal print. This annual tradition continues to create plenty of moments, and we’re thankful for our ChildServe team members who make this possible!

After more than a decade with ChildServe, the mission continues to inspire Mallory Lonergan every day. 💜

"To me, ChildServe's mission is about helping all of the children and young adults we serve live their best lives and I’m grateful to be a small part of that."

Mallory first joined ChildServe in 2012. She came to the organization because of the mission and personal connection. What began as a role as a Personal Care Assistant quickly grew into a career she never expected.

Over the past 13 years, Mallory has grown alongside the organization. She began as a Personal Care Assistant before earning her CNA certification, then completed her nursing degree in 2018.

Since then, she's served in a variety of nursing roles across ChildServe services, including Inpatient Pediatric Rehabilitation, Liaison with Johnston High School students, Inpatient Complex Medical Care, ChildServe – Des Moines Medical Childcare, and now ChildServe Homes.

Along the way, she's continued to expand her expertise by earning certifications as a Certified Pediatric Nurse (CPN) and Certified Brain Injury Specialist (CBIS).

"I've found that earning and maintaining certifications beyond my nursing license has helped me learn more about the kids and young adults I work with and better support their unique needs," said Mallory.

For Mallory, the greatest reward is seeing the difference ChildServe makes every day.

"I'm proud to work at ChildServe because the work we do changes lives, and I get to see that impact every day,” Mallory said. "Every day brings a new opportunity to support others, learn and make a difference. The best moments are seeing the individuals we serve do things they are proud of and getting to celebrate those wins right alongside them."

Join our mission driven nursing team and work with passionate nurses like Mallory! Explore nursing careers and learn what it's like to be part of the ChildServe team: https://www.childserve.org/nursing-at-childserve/
