ChildServe is a not-for-profit organization that partners with families to help children with special health care needs live a great life. Originally founded in 1928 as a convalescent home for children, today ChildServe provides specialized pediatric healthcare services to nearly 5,800 children in Iowa. Through the support of private insurance, public funds, and the generosity of donors, ChildServ

e offers accessible, family-centered care unique to each child’s needs, hopes, and dreams. We provide services to children with special healthcare needs. In creating a common understanding of the term special healthcare needs, we note the term "health" is more than a medical definition or the absence of disability. To ChildServe, health is a state of physical, social, cognitive, environmental, and spiritual well-being. This broader concept of health helps us understand the parameters of .

ChildServe is the first pediatric provider in the country to offer the Bioness Medical Integrated Therapy System (BITS) Functional Reality (FR) technology system. The device is already making a difference for kids like Jaelynn, who recovered at ChildServe’s Pediatric Inpatient Rehabilitation program after experiencing complications from viral meningitis.

One of Jaelynn’s favorite activities in therapy is using our existing BITS system, an interactive touch screen device used to support vision, cognitive and balance skills. When Jaelynn’s family found out there was a functional reality version of the technology, her family chose to give back in a special way. Through the Steven R. Kaldenberg Fund, established in honor of her late uncle, Jaelynn’s family generously donated to help install a BITS FR for individuals in ChildServe’s rehabilitation programs.

BITS FR offers immersive virtual reality and mixed/functional reality experiences to help individuals with neurological deficits to improve and restore function. Designed for Occupational Therapists, Physical Therapists, and Speech-Language Pathologists, BITS FR helps children work toward their specific therapy goals.

BITS FR is the only rehabilitation technology that can immerse individuals inside a multitude of programs, including:
💜 Virtual Reality: Immerse individuals inside the programs to focus on vision, motor and cognition in a 360 environment.
💜 Mixed Reality: Keep individuals in the actual room and overlay virtual targets to enhance spatial awareness, coordination and multisensory integration.
💜 Functional Reality: Transport individuals in real-world environments to encounter real-life scenarios requiring executive functioning.

“Adding the BITS FR as a tool for our Pediatric Rehabilitation program will provide an engaging experience that accelerates recovery,” said Samantha Hahn, OTD, OTR/L, ChildServe Occupational Therapy Team Lead. “By combining visual, cognitive and motor challenges in interactive simulations, BITS FR enhances motivation, improves functional skills and supports multidisciplinary therapy. BITS FR bridges the gap between rehabilitation and real-life independence, giving the children we serve the tools they need to thrive beyond our walls and in the activities they love.”

Providing exceptional, family‑centered care is at the heart of everything our team does – and we’re always building on that foundation.

Recently, ChildServe team members from across disciplines, including our mental health therapy team, completed a two‑day AutPlay training. AutPlay is an integrative, family‑centered play therapy approach that is neurodiversity‑affirming and informed, supporting individuals with autism, ADHD, sensory differences, learning disorders and developmental disabilities.

This training enhances the care our clinicians provide, equipping them with additional tools to support emotional regulation, connection, communication and mental health – so children can thrive in therapy and in everyday life. 💜

✨ We're hiring mental health professionals at ChildServe – Ames and ChildServe – Des Moines! Learn more about our program at https://www.childserve.org/behavioral-health/mental-health-therapy/.

Last month, our friends at Fareway Stores enlisted support from their generous shoppers and raised over $12,500 at their round-up at the register event to support ChildServe’s mission! ❤

These funds will help support ChildServe’s Autism Program, directly impacting kids like Lola, who recently graduated from our Autism Day Program in Iowa City. Her incredible progress is just one example of what’s possible when families have access to the right support.

Our Autism Program meets families where they are and grows with them as their needs evolve. The program offers more than 16 integrated services to support individuals who display characteristics of autism spectrum disorder. Thank you to Fareway shoppers across Iowa for rounding up!
