Grief doesn’t always begin after someone dies. Sometimes, it begins before.

When someone you love is living with a serious illness, you may find yourself grieving changes that are already happening while also thinking about what the future may hold. This is known as anticipatory grief, and it can bring a mix of emotions that can be difficult to understand.

You might be grieving the life you shared, changes in your relationship, or the future you imagined together. You might also feel sadness, fear, anger, guilt, or even moments of hope. All of these feelings can be part of the experience.

For Grief Awareness Month, we’re taking a closer look at anticipatory grief and what it can mean for patients and the people who love them.

💙 Friends of Hospice: Cooking with Purpose for Lightways 💙

When a loved one receives compassionate care, the support extends to the entire family. For the Lundh family, Lightways provided comfort, guidance, and support during a difficult time.

In honor of her father, Len Lundh, who received care from Lightways earlier this year, his daughter Kirsten Peterson is hosting a Pampered Chef fundraiser to give back and support other patients and families in our community.

Kirsten shared, “The care my father received, and the support our family received, meant more than we can express. We are grateful for the Lightways team and wanted to find a way to give back.”

Through this fundraiser, a portion of every purchase will support Lightways. During Pampered Chef’s Double Donation Month, fundraiser proceeds will help provide compassionate hospice care, serious illness care, and grief support for those who need it most.

Whether you are shopping for your own kitchen or looking for a way to support a meaningful cause, your purchase can make a difference.

We are grateful to Kirsten for honoring her father’s memory and for becoming a Friend of Hospice by supporting Lightways and the families we serve.

💜 August is Grief Awareness Month 💜

Grief can show up in unexpected ways.

You may feel the absence of someone you love when a favorite song comes on, during a family tradition, or in an ordinary moment when you wish you could share something with them. Some days may feel manageable, while others can feel much harder.

When someone we love dies, there is no set timeline for grief and no single way to move through it. Grief is deeply personal, and everyone experiences it differently.

At Lightways Hospice and Serious Illness Care, we provide a safe and compassionate place to talk about grief and the death of someone you love. Our grief support services are available for adults, children, teens, and families throughout our community.

You do not have to navigate grief alone. 💙

🌳 Honoring the Veterans Who Walked Before Us

At Lightways Hospice and Serious Illness Care, we believe every veteran has a story worth remembering and a legacy worth honoring.

Located in our Inpatient Unit, the Sentinel Tree offers families a special place to recognize the veteran loved ones who have touched their lives.

When a family receives a Sentinel Tree dog tag, one tag is theirs to keep as a meaningful keepsake honoring their loved one’s impact, story, and the moments that helped shape their family.

The second tag can be placed on our Sentinel Tree, creating a living tribute to the veterans whose service and lives continue to inspire those around them. Each tag is a reminder that their story matters and that their legacy lives on. 💙

Every tag tells a story. Every story deserves to be remembered.
