Let’s talk about the number that stresses out damn near every new parent: the scale. ⚖️
You leave the hospital and suddenly everyone has an opinion about your baby’s weight — the pediatrician, the lactation consultant, your mama, your mother-in-law, the group chat. And if nobody’s explained why the number moves the way it does, it’s easy to spiral into thinking every ounce is a referendum on whether you’re doing this right.
So let’s slow down and actually break it down.
Weight loss after birth is normal. Up to 7% is expected — not a failure, not a sign your milk “isn’t in yet”.
A lot of that early loss is just baby shedding extra fluid, especially if you had an epidural or IV fluids during labor. That fluid can inflate birth weight in the first place, which means some of that “loss” everyone panics about isn’t loss at all — it’s just baby’s body finding its actual baseline.
Most babies are back to birth weight by 10–14 days. After that, breastfed babies tend to gain quickly for the first few months, then naturally slow down around 3–6 months. That slowdown is not your supply failing you. It’s biology doing exactly what it’s supposed to do.
And the chart matters. The WHO growth curve is built from data on breastfed babies — which is why it’s the standard for tracking breastfed infant growth, and why it looks different from the older CDC charts built on formula-fed data. If your provider is using the wrong chart, you could be getting compared to a growth pattern that was never designed for your baby in the first place.
Weight isn’t the whole story either. Scales differ visit to visit. Clothes and diapers add ounces. Time of day matters. Latch, tongue tie, illness, prematurity, delayed milk coming in — all of it plays a role. One number, on one day, in one appointment, is a snapshot — not a final verdict.
This is exactly the kind of thing I help families work through — because you deserve someone who can actually explain what’s happening, not just hand you a percentile and walk out the room.
Here’s how I can help:
🐻 In-home weight checks & feeding assessments — I bring the scale to you, right where you and baby are most comfortable
