🛝☀️ Play hard. Play smart. Play safe!
Summer means more time outside, and the playground is one of the best places for kids to run, climb, explore, and burn off some of that endless energy! 💙💚🩷
Before they take off for the slides and swings, keep these simple safety tips in mind:
☀️ Check the equipment temperature — slides and other surfaces can get dangerously hot in the summer sun.
👟 Wear closed-toe, supportive shoes for safer climbing and running.
🛝 Choose age-appropriate equipment that matches your child's size and abilities.
🌳 Look for safe surfaces like mulch, rubber, sand, or pea gravel beneath equipment.
👀 Supervise actively — accidents can happen quickly, even with bigger kids.
💧 And don't forget water breaks and sunscreen!
A little prevention can help keep a fun afternoon at the playground from turning into an unexpected injury.
Have fun, stay cool, and make some great summer memories! ☀️🛝

🐜🌿 Bug bites are a part of summer—but knowing what to watch for can make all the difference!

From mosquitoes and chiggers to ticks and fire ants, kids spend a lot of time outdoors this time of year. While most insect bites are harmless, some can cause allergic reactions or even transmit illnesses.

Here are a few ways to help protect your child:
🦟 Use an EPA-approved insect repellent when appropriate.
👕 Dress children in lightweight long sleeves and pants when exploring wooded or grassy areas.
🌳 Avoid tall grass and brush whenever possible.
🚿 Shower after spending time outdoors.
🔍 Check your child for ticks after playing outside, hiking, or camping.

🚨 Call your healthcare provider if your child develops:
• A bull’s-eye rash after a tick bite
• Fever, headache, or unusual fatigue following a bite
• Difficulty breathing or swelling of the face or mouth
• Increasing redness, warmth, drainage, or severe pain around a bite

Most insect bites can be treated at home, but if you’re ever unsure, we’re here to help.

👂 Ear Infection or Swimmer’s Ear? Know the Difference! 💙

Ear pain is one of the most common reasons children visit their healthcare provider—but not all ear pain has the same cause.

During the summer months, swimmer’s ear becomes much more common, while middle ear infections can happen any time of year, especially after a cold.

Here’s a quick guide:
🩷 Ear Infection (Middle Ear):
• Often follows a cold
• May include fever
• Deep, constant ear pain
• May cause fussiness or trouble sleeping

💙 Swimmer’s Ear (Outer Ear):
• Pain when touching or pulling on the ear
• Often develops after swimming
• Itching or a feeling of fullness in the ear

If your child has ear pain, don’t guess—we’re here to help determine the cause and get them feeling better as quickly as possible.

☀️ The hottest days of the year are here—and that means it’s time to take heat safety seriously. 🏃‍♀️🏈⚾🥎

As summer practices ramp up, young athletes are at a higher risk for heat-related illnesses. A little preparation can go a long way in keeping kids safe while they stay active.

💧 Encourage plenty of water before, during, and after practice.
🌳 Make sure coaches build in frequent shade and water breaks.
👕 Dress in lightweight, breathable clothing.
⏰ Whenever possible, practice during the cooler parts of the day.
🚨 Know the warning signs of heat illness and don’t ignore them. If your child feels dizzy, nauseated, confused, or develops hot, dry skin, stop activity immediately and seek medical attention.

At Jonesboro Pediatric Clinic, we’re here to help keep your child healthy both on and off the field. Wishing all of our local athletes a fun, safe, and successful summer season!

☀️🏊‍♀️ School’s out and pool season is here! 🏊‍♂️☀️

Nothing says summer like a day by the pool, but it only takes a moment for an accident to happen. Drowning is often silent and can occur in just seconds—even in shallow water.

Before your next pool day, remember these important safety tips:
✅ Always supervise children around water
✅ Use proper fencing and secure pool access
✅ Make sure non-swimmers wear life jackets when appropriate
✅ Teach children basic water safety skills
✅ Take frequent breaks and stay hydrated
✅ Protect little ones from the summer sun with sunscreen, hats, and shade

The best summer memories are the safe ones. 💙
