Could a patient who has epilepsy have a seizure during Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT), just as they could have a seizure anywhere?
Of course, the answer is yes.
Luckily, in the chamber environment, for the most part, it's a relatively safe place.
This patient is already lying down, they're on a soft mattress, surrounded by soft pillows, and their head is being supported on a pillow as well.
So, as far as locations to have a seizure, the HBOT chamber is a relatively safe place.
Now, if you're running chambers and there's a patient who has a seizure in the chamber, it's critical that you do not panic and do not depressurize the chamber during a seizure.
During the tonic phase of a seizure, that patient might be holding their breath. If you decompress a chamber while a patient is holding their breath, you could cause a whole slew of other health issues.
So, it's critical that if there were a patient who had a seizure in the chamber, that the chamber operator not panic: Wait until the tonic phase of the seizure is complete and then slowly decompress the chamber once the patient is conscious and breathing normally.
