Before we close out the month of September, we want to take a moment to recognize HR Appreciation Day, celebrated on September 26th, and the people who work behind the scenes to support employees and help organizations thrive. At The Independent Living Center (TILC), it’s a fitting opportunity to spotlight Sheila Campbell, our Director of HR, whose career has been shaped by a desire to work with people and make a difference.
Sheila has been part of the TILC team for more than two years, drawn to the nonprofit sector by the opportunity to collaborate with others while working for an organization that makes a meaningful difference in people’s lives. “I think what makes TILC special is the people and the mission,” she said. “There’s a genuine sense that what we do matters, and that everyone has a role in supporting that mission.” She also values the compassion, resilience and willingness to help one another that she sees throughout the organization.
Her people-first approach is also what led her to Human Resources. “As an immigrant, I came to the United States with big dreams, a determination to build a meaningful career and a desire to use my professional knowledge and experience to make a difference.”
Over time, she realized that people are at the heart of every organization, and that is what continues to inspire her work. Sheila enjoys supporting employees at different stages of their careers, helping solve problems, fostering a positive workplace culture and connecting people with the tools and resources they need to succeed.
Working at TILC has also taught her an important lesson: the value of listening. “The consumers we serve have taught me that everyone has their own goals, challenges, strengths, and definition of independence. It’s a reminder to approach each person with respect, patience, and compassion.”
Her desire to help others extends beyond her career in HR. If she had chosen a different path, Sheila would have liked to become a doctor. “I think I’ve always been drawn to work that involves helping people,” she said. “At the end of the day, I’d still want my work to have a positive impact on the lives of others.”
That same desire is evident in her work at TILC, where supporting employees and helping create a positive workplace ultimately strengthens the organization’s ability to serve its consumers. And sometimes, a better workday comes down to the little things - “A good laugh with coworkers or consumers and, of course, a cup of coffee in the office can always make my day better.”
As we recognize HR Appreciation Day, we’re grateful for the dedication, compassion and people-first perspective she brings to TILC. Her work is a reminder that supporting the people behind the mission is an important part of making that mission possible.
