Ed Rosenthal grew up in a Jewish family in the Bronx, New York, during a time when cannabis was still heavily stigmatized and misunderstood in mainstream society. He later moved to California, where the counterculture movement of the 1960s and 70s exposed him to cannabis in a more open and experimental environment. His early experiences in urban life combined with the emerging hippie movement helped shape his curiosity about plants, cultivation, and personal freedom.

Rosenthal helped legitimize cannabis cultivation as a form of horticulture and agricultural science rather than an underground hobby. Through his widely used grow guides and advocacy work, he educated generations of growers on proper cultivation techniques, making high-quality cannabis more accessible long before legalization. His legal battles and public advocacy also positioned him as a key figure in the fight for cannabis reform, earning him respect as both an educator and activist who helped bring cannabis into mainstream acceptance.

DJ Short grew up with a strong connection to plants and natural medicine, influenced early on by his Romanian great-grandmother, who was known as a traditional herbalist.
