Saturday Morning Ritual

I take one day off a week from the studio. Saturday is the day I can get motivated for the week to come by reading.

Here is a list of the books and practices that are making my Saturday one of my favorites.

Everyday but especially Saturday I start with The Sunrise Manifesto. This helps me formulate gratitude and put ideas to paper to help me plan out what it is I want to focus my teaching on throughout the week.

Socrates Meets Kant - I recently read The Critique of Pure Reason by Immanuel Kant and was left with my mind so open that I need to try to continue to understand the depth and complexity of ideas that he presents. This book by Peter Kreeft posits the idea of Socrates questioning Kant and is written for the complete beginner in philosophy. I am finding it is helping me to understand some heavy concepts and is bringing Pure Reason to light.

The Complete Book of Vinyasa Yoga by Srvatsa Ramaswami. This one is unbelievably good. Being a student of Pattabhi Jois and a fan of Iyengar yoga over the years it is a work of complete mastery that Srivatsa Ramaswami has put together. Detailing Vinyasa Karma in a way that makes “pure sense.”

Your Spine Your Yoga by Bernie Clark. This one is gets me so excited. Never had I understood physiology in relation to yoga practice in such a detailed and informative way. This one is helping me so much in understanding my own spine. I am learning how to apply what I am learning in my own practice in relation to helping students understand their own spine as well.

The Surfer’s Journal - I have been reading every Surfer’s Journal cover to cover so many years now as a source of true stoke. I can only always see the connection between my yoga and surf practice as completely synchronistic. I find the art of surfing informs my yoga and visa versa. I like to pull from non “yoga” related info to bring extra “soul arch” into my yoga. The feedback loop in continuous.

Find what lights you up and spend time studying. Enlightenment is in the cultivation and appreciation of it.
