A nuclear stress test evaluates blood flow to the heart muscle at rest and under stress.

During the test, a small amount of radioactive tracer is used to create images of blood flow to the heart. Stress may be created with exercise or medication, depending on the patient.

This test may be recommended when your provider needs more information about possible reduced blood flow, symptoms with activity, abnormal EKG findings, or coronary artery disease risk.

A nuclear stress test helps answer: Is the heart getting enough blood flow when it is working harder?

At South Florida Heart & Vascular, we use cardiac testing to help guide diagnosis, prevention, and treatment decisions.

Myth: “Leg Swelling Is Always From Eating Too Much Salt.”

Myth.

Sodium can contribute to fluid retention, but leg swelling can have many causes.

Possible causes include vein disease, heart conditions, kidney disease, medications, lymphatic issues, injury, prolonged standing, or other medical conditions.

Swelling that is new, worsening, one-sided, painful, or associated with shortness of breath or chest discomfort should be evaluated.

A venous ultrasound may be helpful when vein disease or blood clots are a concern.

At South Florida Heart & Vascular, we evaluate leg swelling from both a heart and vascular perspective.

Left ventricular hypertrophy, or LVH, means the main pumping chamber of the heart has become thickened.

One common cause is long-term high blood pressure, because the heart has to work harder to pump against higher pressure.

LVH can also be related to valve disease, genetics, athletic remodeling, or other cardiac conditions.

It may be seen on an EKG or echocardiogram.

Finding LVH is important because it can signal that the heart has been under strain. Management often focuses on identifying the cause and controlling risk factors, especially blood pressure.

At South Florida Heart & Vascular, we help patients understand LVH and what it means for long-term heart health.

Many heart conditions develop quietly over time.

High blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, plaque buildup, and early vascular disease may not cause obvious symptoms at first.

That is why prevention matters.

Preventive cardiology focuses on identifying risk factors early and creating a plan to reduce future risk.

The best time to protect your heart is before symptoms become an emergency.

At South Florida Heart & Vascular, we help patients take a proactive approach to heart and vascular health.

Some heart rhythm issues do not happen during a routine office visit.

Rhythm monitoring may be recommended if you have palpitations, racing heartbeat, skipped beats, dizziness, fainting, unexplained fatigue, suspected AFib, or symptoms that come and go.

Depending on how often symptoms occur, your provider may recommend a Holter monitor, extended monitor, mobile cardiac telemetry, or implantable loop recorder.

The right monitor depends on the symptom pattern.

At South Florida Heart & Vascular, we help patients choose the monitoring approach that fits their history and symptoms.

Myth: “Only Older People Need to Worry About Heart Disease.”

Heart disease risk can build for years before symptoms appear.

High blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, smoking, family history, kidney disease, sleep apnea, stress, and lifestyle factors can affect cardiovascular risk at many ages.

Prevention should start before symptoms.

Knowing your numbers, understanding your family history, and addressing risk factors early can make a meaningful difference.

At South Florida Heart & Vascular, we help patients take a proactive approach to long-term heart health.

LDL cholesterol is often called “bad cholesterol” because elevated LDL can contribute to plaque buildup in the arteries.

Over time, plaque buildup may increase the risk of coronary artery disease, heart attack, stroke, and circulation problems.

Your LDL goal depends on your overall risk. Patients with known heart disease, diabetes, prior stents, prior heart attack, or multiple risk factors may need more aggressive LDL lowering.

LDL is not interpreted alone. Age, blood pressure, smoking history, diabetes, family history, symptoms, and prior cardiac history all matter.

At South Florida Heart & Vascular, we help patients understand cholesterol results in the context of their full cardiovascular risk.

Ejection fraction, or EF, is a measurement of how much blood the left ventricle pumps out with each heartbeat.

A low EF may suggest reduced pumping function and can be associated with heart failure, prior heart attack, cardiomyopathy, valve disease, uncontrolled blood pressure, rhythm issues, or other conditions.

Symptoms may include shortness of breath, fatigue, swelling, reduced exercise tolerance, or difficulty lying flat.

A low EF does not tell the whole story by itself. The cause, symptoms, severity, and treatment options matter.

At South Florida Heart & Vascular, we help patients understand heart function and create a plan for management and follow-up.

Sodium can affect blood pressure and fluid balance.

For some patients, eating too much sodium may contribute to higher blood pressure, swelling, or fluid retention.

Sodium is not only in table salt. It is often hidden in packaged foods, restaurant meals, soups, deli meats, sauces, and snacks.

Reading labels and making small swaps can help.

At South Florida Heart & Vascular, we help patients understand how nutrition, medications, and risk factors work together in blood pressure control.

An abnormal stress test does not automatically mean you need a stent or procedure.

It means your cardiology team needs to interpret the result in context.

Next steps may depend on your symptoms, risk factors, EKG findings, imaging results, exercise capacity, medications, and overall clinical picture.

Some patients may need medication adjustment, closer follow-up, additional imaging, coronary CTA, cardiac catheterization, or other evaluation.

The right next step depends on the reason the test was done and what the results show.

At South Florida Heart & Vascular, we help patients understand abnormal test results and choose the next step thoughtfully.
