🕊️ Claiming the Unclaimed 🕊️

This past Saturday, our Unclaimed Ceremony was truly beautiful.

We had the honor of laying 40 individuals to rest at St. Martin of Tours, ensuring they were remembered with the dignity and respect every person deserves.

We are both humbled and grateful to serve in this role, to stand in honor of those who may not have had someone to do so for them.

Thank you to everyone who came out to support this meaningful event. Your presence helped make it even more special. 🖤

I had the honor of attending an unclaimed veteran interment ceremony at Fort Custer on Friday. With dignity and respect, the community came together to inter three unclaimed veterans in a solemn ceremony attended by dozens and dozens of individuals seeking to pay final respects. Unclaimed does not mean unwanted or unloved. It means circumstances did not allow for next of kin or other loved ones to make final arrangements. In spite of this, the community rallied in support and it is heartwarming to see the reverence and respect shown, sometimes by complete strangers.

🕊️ Join Us for Two Meaningful Community Events 🕊️

We invite you to join us in honoring individuals in our care by helping ensure they are laid to rest with the dignity and respect they deserve. We have two upcoming opportunities open to the public, and we would be honored to have you there.

🇺🇸 Friday, June 5th – Honoring Our Veterans
Three unclaimed veterans will receive full military honors at:
📍 Fort Custer National Cemetery
15501 Dickman Rd, Augusta, MI
🕘 Services at 9:30 a.m., 10:00 a.m., and 11:30 a.m.

🖤 Saturday, June 6th – Claiming the Unclaimed Ceremony
📍 St. Martin of Tours Episcopal Church
2010 Nichols Rd, Kalamazoo, MI
🕚 11:00 a.m.

During this ceremony, we will come together to lay 40 individuals to rest in a peaceful and respectful setting.

A special and heartfelt thank you to the Fort Custer staff and the Patriot Riders, without whom these Veteran Services would not be possible. And to the parishioners at St Martins of tours, who make our large ceremonies possible.

These events are a truly humbling responsibility and an honor for our office to carry out. They are made possible through the generosity of WMed staff and community members, and we are deeply grateful for that support.

🕊️ Claiming the Unclaimed 🕊️

Did you know it is the responsibility of the Medical Examiner’s Office to care for individuals who come into our care with no family available or able to make final arrangements?

In 2025, our office completed 237 unclaimed investigations across the counties we serve. “Unclaimed” does not mean unwanted or unloved, it means that they are being claimed by our community as a whole.

Each year, we hold a special ceremony to honor these individuals and ensure they are laid to rest with the dignity and respect every person deserves.

We invite our community to join us for this meaningful event:

📍 St. Martin of Tours Episcopal Church
2010 Nichols Rd, Kalamazoo
🗓 June 6th
🕚 11:00 a.m.

Together, we will remember, reflect, and lay these individuals to rest in the church’s beautiful Memorial Garden

🇺🇸 Memorial Day 🇺🇸

Today, we pause to honor and remember the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. Their sacrifice is the foundation of the freedoms we enjoy every day.

At our office, we have the privilege of being in our communities year-round, and on days like today, we are especially mindful of those who served with courage and dedication.

As you spend time with family and friends, we encourage everyone to take a moment to reflect, remember, and honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Wishing you a safe and meaningful Memorial Day. 🇺🇸🖤

🌷☀️ Spring is Here… and So Are the Outdoor Adventures! ☀️🌷

The weather is changing, the birds are chirping, and everyone is heading outside, we love to see it! 🐦

Just a few friendly reminders from your neighborhood Medical Examiner’s Office:

• If it starts with “hold my beer”… maybe let’s not 😄
• Gasoline and fire are not a good combo (and yes… your marshmallows will taste terrible) 🔥
• Always look twice for motorcycles, they’re back on the road 🏍️
• Been putting off that doctor’s visit because of winter weather? Consider this your sign 📣 the roads are clear!
• And that large raccoon in your trash can? It does not want to be your friend 🦝

We love our communities, and as cool as we think we are… there are definitely easier (and better) ways to meet us 🖤

Stay safe and enjoy the sunshine!

🚒 Training in Action 🚒

This past weekend, we partnered with our friends and community partners at the Evart Fire Department for a hands-on scenario training with our newest investigators.

These realistic scenarios are an essential part of training, helping our new team members build confidence and become comfortable with the conversations they’ll have with law enforcement, EMS, and families. It’s an opportunity to work through real-life situations, shake off those early nerves, and prepare for the important work ahead.

This profession isn’t for everyone, it can be challenging and demanding, but it’s also incredibly meaningful. And even on the toughest days, we find ways to support one another and share a few laughs along the way.

A huge thank you to the volunteers at Evart Fire Department for donating their time, energy, and expertise to help train and support the next generation of investigators. We’re grateful for your partnership and dedication to our shared mission.

🧠 Department Highlight: Neuropathology 🧠

Did you know our office is home to a Division of Neuropathology that provides highly specialized services, not just locally, but across the entire country?

Our team includes two board-certified Forensic Neuropathologists and three Neuropathology Research Assistants, all working together to better understand diseases and injuries of the brain and nervous system.

Dr. Amanda Fisher-Hubbard and Dr. Nicolas Kostelecky examine cases referred from across the nation, as well as those from within our own office. Their work focuses on identifying the causes and effects of neurological conditions and injuries, including traumatic brain injuries, seizure disorders, dementia, pediatric head trauma, and more. Through detailed examination of the brain, eyes, and spinal cord, they help provide critical answers in complex cases.

On top of all of their daily duties and daily caseload, our Neuropathology Division is also involved in cutting-edge neuroscience research, collaborating with institutions such as the Lieber Institute for Brain Development.

Our research team plays a key role in preparing and studying tissue used to better understand a wide range of neurological and neuropsychiatric conditions, from developmental disorders to neurodegenerative diseases and traumatic injuries. This work contributes to advancing knowledge, improving care, and shaping the future of brain health.

This is a behind-the-scenes specialty that many people may not realize exists within a Medical Examiner’s Office, and we’re proud to have such a highly skilled team making an impact both in our community and far beyond.

🎉 A Week of Appreciation! 🎉

Did you know it’s Lab Appreciation Week, and that yesterday was Administrative Professionals Day? We couldn’t let that pass without recognizing two groups that keep our office running behind the scenes.

🔬 Our Laboratory Team plays a vital role in the work we do every day. Having an in-house lab allows us to perform critical testing that directly impacts our ability to serve families and provide answers. Their work may not always be visible, but its impact is tremendous.

📄 Our Administrative Professionals are truly the backbone of our office. From keeping everything organized to anticipating needs before we even ask, they ensure that every part of our operation runs smoothly. Quite simply, we couldn’t do this work without them.

To celebrate these incredible teams, we’ve been having a little fun each day with themed activities and today was TWINS DAY! 👯‍♀️

Enjoy these photos of our amazing staff showing off their amazing skills this week, and join us in recognizing and thanking these often unseen (but absolutely essential) members of our team.

🖤 We are so grateful for all that you do!
