Looking at Time with a Different Lens
Years ago I came across a book that helped me shift my perspective from managing my time to mapping my time. This process helps create a more visual, creative, and tangible way of seeing and making the most of our time.
First, write out your BIG dreams and goals. It really is the first part of mapping - you have to know where you are going. When you want to use the GPS in your car you first have to plug in your destination. There might me detours, but if you have your destination firmly locked in, your own navigation system will be able to recalculate.
Next step is to be sure to include stops along the way. These help keep your priorities intact. Time for self, family, community. You determine how much time you spend with each area. Are you currently making those stops?
Now, you can plan for the rest stops. Ask yourself, "Am I doing my activities at the right time for me?" "Does my schedule make me feel balanced and energized?" If not, where do you need to recalculate?
Keep doing this exercise until you feel confident about each step.
One way is to have a planner, but make sure if fits your needs and preferences. Over the years I have used various types depending on the work I was doing but there was always one non-negotiable, it's what I call "white space", the time between the activities where I can bring my mind, body, and spirit back together, in balance.
So, let me ask you are you "managing" your time or "mapping" it to make sure you reach your desired destination?
Let me know your thoughts.
And if this had an impact on you I hope you will consider sharing it with someone else.
