I've worked with a lot of vets over the years. I even often wondered, how do you greet a vet on Veterans Day? Thank them for their service, sure. Combat vets have been through a lot though. Sometimes this doesn't seem like enough: One day and a thank you for your service.

You guys are warriors and warriors can be injured, physically and mentally. The human mind is not meant for violence like we see in wars today.

I've been taught to appreciate all warriors because of who they are and the sacrifices they make. It's not about the divisions of the war. I was taught to be loving and accepting to all warriors and to ignore the divisions of the war.

Maybe ask first but give a hug. Let them know they are loved and appreciated. It will do something for your own mental health.

Have you ever felt you needed to try therapy but felt apprehensive? Try 'Love' a video series to heal from your past gently and efficiently. It is one of the first things I teach my clients. It's also a great way to introduce yourself to therapy and it costs next to nothing.

As many of you know, ALOT is based in Hawaii and our office is 5 miles across the water from the tragic fires in Lahaina. I wanted to say thank you to everyone who was checking in on us, everyone is safe and accounted for.

However, our prayers and hearts are with the residents and ohana of Lahaina. Unexpected tragedies like this are not only highly traumatizing for the people in the incident but for the volunteers, first responders, and work crews. We've worked with victims and crews of Hurricane Katrina in the past. The trauma usually begins to show itself after we've slowed down and we've begun to process what we've been through.

Get help if you're feeling more emotional, tearful, anxious, worried, frozen in fear, having nightmares, or frightening thoughts/visions. These are all signs of trauma. Maui may be overrun, look into telehealth. A Little Oneness Therapy, Molokai Mental Health, Molokai Family Urgent Care, Na Pu'uwai (Native Hawaiian) clinic, are just a few resources available via telehealth.

For those sheltering with Ohana and friends, stop by a shelter to see what resources are available to you so you can start rebuilding your life. Or see a local social worker. These resources are newly emerging so check back regularly.

I once suffered from severe insomnia for over 4 years. I averaged 3 hours a sleep a night. I worked with my stresses in my life in hopes of remedying the insomnia. I was seeing many of the signs of chronic inadequate sleep. In particular, short term memory loss which, began to impact my work. There was one stress I eliminated that resolved the issue. I divorced my partner and I began to sleep again.

This is not to suggest that a divorce is the answer to insomnia. But sometimes a stress that we continually try to improve may not be our problem.

I found out my partner was ready to leave but hadn’t the courage to make that step for years. So, they continued the relationship doing everything they can to sabotage it. While I was trying to improve it, the other was trying to ruin it. I didn’t know because they were hiding there destructive actions.

It was the tools I learned at A Little Oneness Therapy that helped me find the source of my insomnia and address it expediently and graciously. Now I sleep without issue. 😴
