Most people know oral surgeons for wisdom teeth and dental implants.
But oral & maxillofacial surgery encompasses much more — including the management of complex facial trauma and jaw fractures.
After an accident, this patient came to us with fractures on both sides of the mandible: an open fracture through the right mandibular body and a fracture of the left mandibular ramus.
Dr. Weber’s treatment required several carefully planned stages.
First, the right mandibular fracture was surgically realigned and stabilized with internal fixation. The upper and lower jaws were then temporarily secured in the proper relationship to maintain the patient’s bite while both fractures healed.
Several weeks later, the wires and fixation screws were removed and the stability of the fractures and occlusion were evaluated. After continued healing, the remaining plate was ultimately removed.

What can look like a series of X-rays represents something much more important: restoring the alignment of the jaw, the relationship of the teeth, and ultimately the patient’s function.
This is another side of oral & maxillofacial surgery that our community may not see every day — and one we are incredibly proud to provide close to home.
