Red-Light Therapy: It all starts at a cellular level!

At AK Wellness & Tanning LLC, we believe understanding the science behind wellness is just as important as experiencing it. As the only Board-Certified Light Therapist in the state of Alaska (BANHS), I want to share a small fraction of the fascinating science behind what happens inside your body during Red-Light Therapy.

Let’s talk about the powerhouse of the cell: Inside many of your cells are tiny structures called mitochondria. Their job is to help produce adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the energy your cells need to carry out essential functions. Think of ATP as your body's cellular energy currency, your cells depend on it for everything from maintenance and communication to growth and repair.

So, what happens when Red-Light reaches your cells? Red-Light Therapy, scientifically known as photobiomodulation (PBM), uses specific wavelengths of light that can pe*****te tissues and interact with light-sensitive molecules inside your cells. One mechanism involves an enzyme called cytochrome c oxidase, which plays an important role in mitochondrial energy production. When these molecules absorb light, they may trigger a series of biological responses that influence how your cells produce energy, communicate, and respond to stress.

Here's where it truly gets interesting: Your body naturally produces a molecule called nitric oxide (NO), which can sometimes interfere with how efficiently your mitochondria produce energy. Scientists believe that Red-Light may help release nitric oxide from this enzyme, potentially allowing oxygen to be used more efficiently and helping your cells produce energy. Think of it like removing a roadblock from your cells' energy-producing system, when that roadblock is removed, your cellular powerhouses may work more efficiently.

This can influence several important processes:

✨ Cellular Energy: Supporting the production of ATP, which fuels your cells.
✨ Cellular Communication: Helping activate signals that tell your cells how to respond to oxidative stress and support repair.
✨ Inflammation: Influencing the body's natural inflammatory responses.
✨ Skin & Tissue Health: Supporting processes involved in collagen production, skin maintenance, and tissue recovery.

Red-Light Therapy doesn't give your body energy the same way food does. Instead, it may help your cells use their existing energy-producing systems more efficiently. Why does this matter for your body and skin? Because healthy cellular function is the foundation of how our bodies maintain, protect, and repair themselves. As we age, natural changes occur in collagen production, cellular metabolism, skin elasticity, and our body's ability to recover from everyday stress.

The goal is not to force your body to do something unnatural, but to use specific wavelengths of light to influence the biological processes your body already relies on. Of course, not all red-light devices or treatments are created equal! Wavelength, joule output, treatment duration, and consistency all influence the biological response. Results can vary depending on the equipment output.
Wellness isn't just about how you look on the outside, it’s about supporting your body from within, and that starts at a cellular level.

Fun Fact: NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) originally began experimenting with red light therapy on plant growth in space and then to help heal wounds in astronauts. Like many developments, other potential uses began to be investigated.

In fact, Red-Light Therapy is already widely medically accepted in its use in photodynamic therapy. In this therapy, low-power red laser light is used to activate a photosensitizer drug. The interaction creates a chemical reaction that destroys cells. It’s used to treat some skin conditions, including skin cancer and psoriasis, acne and warts, and other types of cancer.

✨ Compression Therapy ✨

Compression Therapy is much more than simply “squeezing” the muscles. It utilizes intermittent pneumatic compression (IPC) to support circulation, lymphatic movement, and recovery through controlled, sequential pressure.

At AK Wellness & Tanning LLC, our compression system uses multi-chamber garments for the legs, hips, or arms. During a session, individual air chambers inflate and release in a programmed sequence, creating a rhythmic compression pattern throughout the treatment area.

So, what is happening during your session? 👇

🩸 Supporting Circulation & Venous Return:

As the chambers inflate, controlled external pressure is applied to the tissues and underlying blood vessels. As that pressure progresses through the garment and then releases, it helps support venous return (the movement of blood from the extremities back toward the heart).
This is one reason pneumatic compression is popular among athletes, people with physically demanding jobs, and those who spend prolonged periods sitting or standing.

💧 Encouraging Lymphatic Movement:

Your lymphatic system plays an important role in maintaining normal fluid balance within the tissues. Unlike your circulatory system, however, the lymphatic system doesn't have a central pump like the heart does. Instead, lymphatic fluid movement is supported by things like muscle contractions, physical movement, breathing, and changes in tissue pressure. Sequential pneumatic compression therapy provides an additional mechanical stimulus that can help encourage the movement of lymphatic fluid through the extremities, supporting the body's normal fluid-management processes.

💪 Supporting Muscle Recovery:

After exercise or strenuous activity, your muscles may feel heavy, tight, fatigued, or sore. The alternating compression and release provided during a session can support circulation within the treated area and is commonly incorporated into post-exercise and athletic recovery protocols.

Compression Therapy may help:
- Support healthy circulation
- Promote normal venous return
- Encourage lymphatic fluid movement
- Support normal fluid balance in the extremities
- Reduce feelings of heaviness or fatigue
- Support recovery following physical activity
- Ease feelings of muscle soreness and stiffness
- Promote relaxation between training sessions or demanding workdays
