The next stop on our tour of the Haunted House of Hidden Sugars... the room of Sneaky Savory Foods!👻

Sugar and sweeteners can show up in foods we may not expect because we don't think of them as "sweets." Some sauces such as ketchup & teriyaki, sides such as baked beans, peanut butter-type products such as chocolate hazelnut spread, and some glazes can have added sugar that goes unnoticed until it raises blood sugar.

Be mindful of serving sizes when enjoying these savory dishes, and stay on the lookout for hidden sugars! 🎃

Beware!☠️ Enter, if you dare, into our Haunted House of Hidden Sugars👻🎃☠️ Our first stop... the room of Sweetened Beverages!🥤🧋🧃🍹

👻Sugary drinks are a top culprit for high blood sugar. These liquid sugars can enter the bloodstream VERY quickly and send blood sugar soaring 🚨 sometimes even putting people in the emergency room!

🎃Sodas and sweet teas are usually packed with added sugar, but so are other drinks you may not expect. Flavored coffees & lattes contain sugary syrups that drive up blood sugar.

👻Even fruit drinks are not as healthy as they seem... Many fruit beverages are actually high sugar drinks loaded with added sugars but disguised as healthy options. If you’re looking for a fruit juice drink, make sure to choose 100% juice drinks to avoid added sugar.

🎃Don't be tricked by hidden sugars this season! Join us next week on our next adventure into the Haunted House of Hidden Sugars...

Reminder that this week is recognized as National Exercise with Your Child Week! 🤸‍♀️

Regular playtime and movement are important for kids to reduce screen time and to encourage health & wellness for their lifetime! Did you know:

🥎 Only 25% of kids get the recommended 60 minutes of daily physical activity...

⛳️ 1 in 5 kids today has obesity, increasing their risk of diabetes later in life...

🏋️‍♂️ YOU - their parent - have a huge influence on your child's exercise behaviors. Parents are great role models for healthy (or unhealthy) behaviors....

🏆Research shows that kids with parents who support physical activity are over SIX TIMES more likely to be active!

If you haven't already this week, challenge your family to find fun ways to move more together!

Friendly Monday reminder this summer: poor sleep = poor blood sugar!👎

Research has shown that good sleep is so important to keeping blood sugar in range and even prevents Type 2 Diabetes!
☀️Summer brings wacky schedules, vacations, and MUCH longer daylight hours that can get in the way of healthy sleep routines.

Don't let summer steal your sleep! Your blood sugar will thank you😉

Ever wonder what makes a whole grain product healthy? The students at Runge ISD ACE can tell you!

Today the students became food scientists 👨‍🔬 and explored how much more slowly a fiber-rich whole grain food breaks down in the stomach compared to a refined grain - keeping us full, focused, and energized!

We sampled whole grain foods (and loved them!) and learned what to look for on packaging to know that the grain foods we're eating are healthy whole grains. We're ready for a healthy future!
