"it’s estimated that more than 12% of Americans carry Toxoplasma gondii, a microscopic parasite."

"Dr. Todd Watts, an expert in chronic illnesses, suggests that these hidden invaders are far more common than most people realize, even in developed countries like the U.S.."

"One of the primary reasons parasitic infections often go undetected is that their symptoms are incredibly varied and can easily be mistaken for other conditions. Dr. Watts highlights how digestive issues, for example, might be misdiagnosed as Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) or Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), when parasites could be the true underlying cause."

Here's a quick read about parasites from our website.

Parasites are wayyyyy more common than you think. Parasites fall under the category of co-infections* in our clinic. We often find people with chronic digestive issues and inflammation have some level of parasitic infection.

"As of July 13, 2026, 1,645 lab-confirmed cases were reported in people who acquired cyclosporiasis in the United States. Cases were reported by 34 states. These people became sick after eating food in the United States and did not report any travel during the 14 days before they got sick." - CDC

"We assume a 6-week reporting lag between illness onset and case reporting to CDC." - CDC

Parasitic infections newly acquired can take 6 weeks or more to manifest as symptoms. Often the symptoms are episodic and difficult to attribute to an individual cause. Parasites also can have incubation periods. The cyclosporiasis go through different phases. The sporulated oocysts can exist for weeks to months before becoming active and that form is resistant to routine methods of disinfectant. So fighting parasites can be ongoing and take some time.

*A co-infection refers to the simultaneous infection of a host by two or more pathogenic organisms, which may be of the same or different species (e.g., bacteria, viruses, parasites, fungi).

Cyclosporiasis is a nationally notifiable disease, and cases are reported to CDC.
