Protecting your energy after poor treatment isn’t cruelty, it’s self-respect. But to those who once fed on you, your boundaries feel like a threat. Narcissistic individuals often respond with a smear campaign, triangulating others to frame you as mean, selfish, or unstable. They need you to look broken so they can feel whole. Let them. Some of us have always been open and truthful, assuming others did the same. We took words at face value, mistaking performative politeness for genuine care. Over time, we realized our kindness and generosity were read as naivety, even as a target for manipulation.
