Early Byrd Wellness After losing my parents to Alzheimer’s, I dedicated my career to understanding how nutrition and inflammation shape long-term health.

As a BCHN® and Functional Lab Analyst, I help mid-lifers uncover the root of fatigue, inflammation & confusing labs.

If your vegetables feel a little… slimy…

that’s not something to ignore.

Most people just rinse them off and move on.

But that texture is actually a clue.

Because bacteria don’t just exist quietly. They produce byproducts—and some of those byproducts can directly interact with your immune system and inflammatory pathways.

And once they’re there?

It’s not something you can simply wash away.

This week’s blog dives into one of the most overlooked gut-brain connections I see in practice, including:
• inflammation
• mood changes
• brain fog
• food reactivity
• and why pre-cut foods may not be as harmless as they seem

If your mind feels off, your gut might be part of the story.

It’s a loop—your gut and brain are constantly talking.

The good news? You don’t need to change everything to start feeling better.

Small habits—like slowing down while you eat, getting outside in the morning, putting your phone down at meals, and taking a few deep breaths—can make a real difference.

Nothing extreme. Just consistent.

Start with one.

Which one would you try first?

You’re exhausted… but your brain won’t turn off.

You finally get into bed, and suddenly your mind decides it’s the perfect time to replay conversations, make tomorrow’s to-do list, and overthink things that didn’t seem urgent all day.

So you try the usual things:
• go to bed earlier
• cut back on caffeine
• maybe add a supplement or two

And yet… something still feels off.

Because sometimes it’s not about doing more.

Sometimes it’s about what your body has quietly run out of.

I broke down one of the most overlooked pieces of the gut-brain-stress connection in this week’s blog—and it’s probably not being talked about the way you think.

Let’s normalize this—

not all anxiety starts in your brain.

Sometimes it starts in your gut… and your brain is just reacting to what’s going on internally.

Your gut and brain are constantly communicating, and when your gut is inflamed, stressed, or out of balance, your nervous system feels it.

That “random” anxiety…

the overthinking…

that on-edge feeling you can’t explain…

it might not be random at all.

This doesn’t mean it’s only about gut health—but it does mean your body is connected in ways most of us were never taught.

We’re diving into how to actually support this next (in a realistic way).

Have you ever noticed a connection between your mood and your gut?

When people suspect “leaky gut,” the conversation often jumps straight to gluten or dairy.

But one of the first things I look at with clients is how much of their diet comes from ultra-processed foods.

Many packaged foods contain additives such as emulsifiers, stabilizers, artificial ingredients, and refined oils that may influence the gut microbiome and digestive environment in sensitive individuals.

Learning to recognize these ingredients on a label can be a helpful first step toward simplifying your diet and supporting digestive health.

Often the goal isn’t perfection—it’s simply shifting toward more whole, minimally processed foods.

You can be eating well… and still feel like something’s off.

This is one of the most overlooked things I see—and most people have never even heard of it.

I broke it down simply in this week’s blog.

“Leaky gut” is a phrase that gets used a lot online, but it’s often misunderstood.

What people are usually referring to is something called intestinal permeability — a change in how tightly the cells of the small intestine hold together.

Your gut lining is incredibly thin — only one cell thick — and its job is to act like a selective barrier. Nutrients pass through, while unwanted substances stay inside the digestive tract.

When that barrier becomes stressed or irritated, the spaces between those cells can become less selective. This may allow substances to pass through that normally wouldn’t.

This process can influence the immune system and is one reason digestive health is closely connected to inflammation, food sensitivities, and overall wellness.

Supporting gut health isn’t about chasing trends.
It’s about supporting the systems that protect and maintain that barrier every day.

Leaky Gut and Inflammation: Why It Shows Up on Your Labs

When most people hear “leaky gut,” they think bloating.

They don’t think triglycerides.
They don’t think cholesterol panels.
They don’t think liver metabolism.

But I often see leaky gut patterns show up right alongside stubborn lab markers.

If inflammation has been simmering under the surface, it can influence more than digestion — it can show up on your blood work.

If your labs haven’t made sense lately, this connection might explain why.
