This week, our Jubilee pilgrimage team had the profound privilege of visiting a monumental landmark of Black Catholic history: the magnificent, historic St. Alphonsus Liguori "Rock" Catholic Church right here in St. Louis.

Standing inside this sacred sanctuary, we were deeply moved by its historical significance. This is the very space where holy pioneers like Venerable Father Augustus Tolton—the first openly African-American priest in our nation's history— preached and offered the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.

On this Juneteenth, and truly every single day, we pause to honor and celebrate the heroic contributions of these future saints. Despite facing severe historical hardships, their unwavering devotion to the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus allowed them to build the vibrant schools, hospitals, and communities we walk among today. Their lives are a beautiful testament to what it means to become a living mantle of Christ's love.

Saint Alphonsus Liguori Church ("The Rock")Famous Nickname: Known across St. Louis simply as "The Rock Church" because its massive Gothic Revival exterior is built entirely from rough-cut stone.Massive Steeple: The church features a towering, gorgeous spire that reaches 237 feet into the sky, completed in 1893.African-American Heritage: It is a vibrant, landmark parish that proudly celebrates worship in an African-American Catholic style, complete with two passionate Gospel choirs.History of Inclusivity: The church took a major stand against segregation when its leadership officially ended segregated seating back in 1941.Major Modern Restoration: The church is currently undergoing a massive multi-million dollar restoration, utilizing a $500,000 grant specifically dedicated to preserving historic Black churches.
