New COVID Variant โ€œCicadaโ€ Draws Attention as Experts Track Spread

A new COVID-19 variant known as BA.3.2, also called โ€œCicada,โ€ is getting attention after U.S. health officials reported it through airport and wastewater surveillance. The variant was first detected in the United States in a traveler screened at San Francisco International Airport in June 2025, and later appeared in wastewater monitoring across multiple states.

Experts say BA.3.2 has mutations in the spike protein that may help it partly evade immunity from past infection or vaccination. However, there is no clear evidence so far that it causes more severe illness than recent strains. Doctors say the bigger concern is whether it could spread more easily or lead to more breakthrough infections.

Symptoms linked to the variant appear similar to other recent Omicron-related strains, including sore throat, cough, congestion, fatigue, headache, fever, and sometimes stomach-related symptoms. Health experts continue to stress that vaccines should still provide important protection against severe illness and hospitalization, even if protection against infection is reduced.

For now, specialists say the variant is something to watch carefully, not panic over. Continued surveillance remains important as researchers study whether BA.3.2 changes the pattern of COVID spread in the months ahead.

Did you know doctors in the U.S. are now saving 2+ hours every day thanks to AI?

Not because theyโ€™re seeing fewer patientsโ€”but because AI is handling the most time-consuming tasks like:
โœ” Writing medical notes
โœ” Reviewing patient data
โœ” Managing paperwork
โœ” Supporting faster decisions

That means:
๐Ÿ’™ More time with patients
๐Ÿ˜Œ Less burnout
โšก Better care overall

AI isnโ€™t replacing doctorsโ€”itโ€™s helping them focus on what truly matters.
