Fellow Human Beings: Real Stories of Caring for People with MH/IDD
Published by NADD Press!
What does it mean to truly see another person?
Fellow Human Beings is a collection of deeply human stories drawn from years of walking alongside people living with intellectual and
developmental disabilities, mental illness, trauma, and profound vulnerability. These are not case studies or clinical success stories. They are lives—messy, resilient, and contradictory. Through the journeys of real people facing serious challenges, this book explores what happens at the intersection of care, power, dignity, and love. It asks hard questions about systems meant to help—and about the people who work within them—while never losing sight of the individuals at the center.

Fellow Human Beings challenges us to look beyond diagnoses and behaviors and to encounter people as they are: complex, wounded,
hopeful, and worthy of belonging. This is a book for clinicians, caregivers, families, and anyone who has ever struggled to understand another person—or themselves—with greater compassion.

Because in the end, we are not problems to be solved. We are fellow human beings.

About the Author:
Bruce Davis, PhD, has worked in the field of intellectual and developmental disabilities since 1987. He currently serves as Deputy
Commissioner of Clinical Services for the Tennessee Department of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities, where he develops
clinical programs for people with complex behavioral health needs.

Please join us for our next Shared Learning Groups as we discuss: Slow Down, Listen, and Respond with Humanity: Su***de Prevention Support Strategies for People with Co-Occurring Conditions. When navigating complex, co-occurring conditions, people can often feel trapped and see no way out, placing them at a higher risk for su***de. While every experience is unique, the most powerful intervention often begins when we slow down, listen deeply, and respond with intention. Join this upcoming Shared Learning Group as we discuss critical warning signs and risk factors, while sharing actionable strategies and resources to provide ongoing support and restore a sense of hope.

There are four sessions July 29-30, 2026 on the same topic for different target audiences. Please register for the session most relevant to you, or whichever best fits into your schedule.
