Heat Wave

The past week’s heat wave had so many of our melasma clients reaching out because their skin suddenly felt more reactive, darker, inflamed, or “activated.”

And if that happened to you — you’re not imagining it.

Melasma is triggered by more than just the sun. UV exposure, visible light, heat, inflammation, and hormones all play a role, which is why warmer weather can cause pigmentation to flare even when you’re being careful.

The good news? A few small adjustments can make a huge difference.

Here are some of the biggest things we recommend right now:

❄️ COOL IS YOUR FRIEND
Melasma thrives in heat and inflammation. Cooling the skin helps calm melanocyte activity and reduce flare-ups.

Think:
• chilled skincare
• cryo globes
• cool towels
• avoiding overheating the skin whenever possible

Even simple changes can help keep pigment calmer throughout the summer months.

🧴 TINTED SPF EVERY SINGLE DAY
This is non-negotiable for melasma-prone skin.

SPF protects against UVA + UVB rays, while the iron oxides in tinted SPF help protect against visible light — another major trigger for pigmentation.

One of our favorites is the Daily Defense Tinted SPF because it’s mineral-based, hydrating, and gentle on sensitive skin.

🍍 GENTLE EXFOLIATION > OVERDOING IT
Melasma skin usually responds better to calming, consistent exfoliation rather than aggressive treatments.

The Pineapple Refining Tonique and Bright Skin Exfoliating Peel are beautiful options for brightening while still respecting the skin barrier.

Melasma babes, this past week’s heat wave had SO many of you reaching out because your skin suddenly felt ultra activated ☀️ 🔥

Melasma is triggered by more than just the sun — UV, visible light, heat, inflammation, and hormones all play a role. Which means summer can absolutely wake it up.

If you’re starting over or getting your routine back on track, here are my biggest tips:

❄️ 1. COOL IS YOUR FRIEND
Heat is one of the biggest melasma triggers. Think:
- cryo globes
- cool towels
- chilled skincare
- avoiding overheating the skin

Keeping inflammation down is everything.

🧴 2. TINTED SPF IS NON-NEGOTIABLE
Not just beach days. Every single day.

SPF protects against UVA + UVB, while the iron oxides in tinted SPF help protect against visible light—another major melasma trigger.

I love the Daily Defense Tinted SPF because it’s mineral-based, hydrating, and sensitive-skin friendly.

🍍 3. ENZYMES OVER AGGRESSIVE ACIDS
Melasma skin usually responds better to gentle exfoliation than overly aggressive treatments.

🧪4. WE STILL LOVE ACIDS THOUGH
Not all acids are created equal.

Azelaic acid + tranexamic acid are two of the best for targeting pigmentation gently and effectively.
