One of the things that almost stopped my mom from choosing the path that saved her life had nothing to do with fear of treatment or fear of the unknown.
She was worried the money she would spend on her care was money that was supposed to go to me when she was gone. Quietly carrying the concern that if she chose a holistic path and it did not work, my family would blame me for supporting that decision.
She was sitting with all of that alone while I was trying to figure out why she seemed hesitant about an option that felt so clearly right for her.
When we finally sat down and she told me what was actually going on, I was heartbroken and grateful at the same time. Heartbroken that she had been carrying all of that. Grateful we had the conversation before a decision got made based on everyone else's fears instead of her own.
No amount of money would be worth a single day without her. The family concern, I told her, was mine to carry, not hers.
She chose her path that day. Within 6 months she was in complete remission.
The people we love will sometimes need us to have the hard conversation with them so they can finally choose what is actually right for them. That is a big part of what this book is about.
