Spring is the perfect time to make sure your family is ready for summer camps, sports programs, travel teams, and outdoor activities.

Before schedules get packed, take a few minutes to review any required forms, camp or sports physicals, medication needs, allergy plans, and immunization documentation. Waiting until the last minute can create unnecessary stress, especially when paperwork is required before your child can participate.

It is also a good time to remind kids and teens about staying hydrated, using sunscreen, stretching safely, wearing the right protective equipment, and speaking up early if something hurts. Small aches and pains can turn into bigger issues when they are ignored.

Summer should be fun, active, and safe — and a little preparation can go a long way.

Emergency One offers convenient care for many minor sports injuries, illness concerns, and camp or sports physical needs.

Late spring to mid-summer is a critical time as most tick bites come from nymphs, the juvenile tick that is so small it is easy to miss.

However, this year, the ticks are not wasting any time. According to the CDC, emergency room visits for tick bites are at their highest level since 2017! And of course, New York is leading the way.

If you are interested, you can track New York State tick risk at https://on.ny.gov/4lHBgdU, where the map breaks down the state into regions.

If you do get a tick bite, Emergency One Urgent Care can help. Patients treated with appropriate antibiotics in the early stages of Lyme disease usually recover rapidly and completely. One of the most common signs of a tick bite is a "target" like rash, concentric circles radiating from the point of contact. If you discover this type of rash, see your physician immediately.

It is important to initiate antibiotic treatment in the early stages to reduce the chance of developing recurring symptoms. Approximately 10-20% of patients may experience persistent symptoms. In those patients, continued antibiotic treatment may not ameliorate the symptoms, but they should gradually go away over time.

With a healthy dose of tick prevention and a vigilant post-outdoors inspection, you can minimize your chance of tick bites. If you suspect that you may have been bitten, visit us here at Emergency One, our providers are skilled in diagnosing and identifying tick-borne illnesses.
