Mediterranean Diet & Psoriasis

According to a recent small 16-week study, eating a Mediterranean diet significantly reduces the severity of mild to moderate psoriasis. In the trial, researchers randomly assigned participants to eat either a standard low-fat diet or a Mediterranean diet. The study found that half of those on the Mediterranean diet experienced a 75% reduction in severity and about 25% of that group achieved a 90% reduction. However, none of those in the low-fat diet group showed any improvement. A Mediterranean diet is rich in olive oil, vegetables, fruits, legumes, nuts, whole grains and fish. The study suggests the diet can be an effective adjunct to traditional treatments.

Another Reason To Quit

Quitting smoking may promote better lung function, lower your risk of premature death, reduce your risk of certain cancers and cut your risk of heart attack and stroke. There's much evidence regarding quitting earlier in life to reduce the physical and cognitive health damage of smoking. A new study suggests that quitting even in mid- to later life might still be beneficial in slowing cognitive decline. Researchers studied about 4,700 adults ages 40-89 and found that for smokers who quit, memory decline rate was delayed by 20% and verbal fluency decline rate was slowed by about 50%, when compared to those who did not quit.

IBS & The Mediterranean Diet

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is characterized by chronic belly pain, bloating, and changes in bowel habits such as diarrhea, constipation, or both. In a recent study, researchers assigned 139 people with IBS to eat either a traditional healthy diet (limiting fatty, spicy and processed foods, caffeine and alcohol) or a Mediterranean diet, rich in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, nuts, fish and olive oil. After 6 weeks, 62% of the Mediterranean diet group had a substantial decrease in IBS symptoms. Forty-two percent of the traditional group also had a drop in symptoms. Other studies also have found the Mediterranean diet to be as effective as the low-FODMAP diet, but less restrictive.

Hair Straightener & Cancer Risk

Women who use hair straightening products more than 4 times a year have a significantly higher risk of developing uterine cancer than non-users, according to a new study. Similar research also suggests a 30% increase in risk of breast cancer among frequent users. The latest study, which tracked more than 46,000 women for 13 years, found that participants using hair relaxers or straighteners had 2.7 times the risk of pancreatic cancer and a 71% higher risk of thyroid cancer than non-users. These products often contain formaldehyde, phthalates and parabens, which, when absorbed into the bloodstream through the scalp, may disrupt the endocrine system and/or potentially damage DNA.

Acupuncture May Help Back Pain

Acupuncture therapy may help reduce lower-back pain. In a recent study, researchers randomly assigned 800 adults with chronic lower-back pain, age 65 or older, to either standard (8-15 sessions) or enhanced (12-19 sessions) acupuncture treatment or the usual medical care for 3 months. After 6 months, participants completed disability questionnaires. Thirty-nine percent of those in the standard and 44% of those in the enhanced acupuncture group reported improvement in pain-related disability. Only 29% of the usual-care group reported improvement. Experts say acupuncture may be a complementary treatment for lower-back pain management.
