Spotting for forced reps is not the easiest on all your free weight exercises but for most it can be done

Seated DB lateral raise takes a bit of the swing out versus the standing version

Dumbbell raises were the mainstay for my shoulder training program throughout my 5 decades of competing

Blood and Guts training with overseeing the process here in the World Famous Kissimmee Muscle 24 hour gym

Spotting forced reps is a bit of an art form that I guess I just take for granted. The first gym I trained in, Main Street Gym in Flat River, MO was as hard core as any I have trained in since 1987. There, it was common to tack at least a couple of forced reps onto the end of a set and sometime more than just a couple

The “art” in spotting is to help keep the weight moving while being mindful that the athlete may reach that point of momentary muscular failure at any time requiring a bit of an intervention

Here, the task was to get to both eccentric (positive) and eccentric (negative failure) first by assisting so that the weights keep moving in the positive and second, by moving the weights into the top position and assisting with CONTROLLED lowering of the movement thereby reaching both positive and negative failure

I much prefer training with a few forced reps though opted to train lone most of the time past my 20’s simply because not many athletes could match my challenging schedule and most of them were also unable to maintain my training pace

Count me out for any “reps in reserve” training! I’ll reserve that style for when I’m just playing around!
