Tomorrow, October 15, Medicare's Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) opens. Here is what that actually means:

✔ You can make a coverage change any time from Oct 15 through Dec 7. Changes take effect January 1.
✔ Tomorrow is a starting line, not a deadline. December 7 is the deadline.
✔ You do not have to change at all. If your plan still fits after a review, staying put is a good outcome.

What helps most right now: write down questions as you read your Annual Notice of Change, the letter your plan mailed about 2027. Bring that list for review, and we will go through it together.

1. Costs, including premiums, copays, and deductibles
2. Benefits that may have changed
3. Whether your doctors are still included
4. Whether your pharmacy is still included
5. Whether your prescriptions are still covered the way you expect

This time of year, you will see a lot of messaging that says "act now" or "don't miss these changes." We do things differently.

When your Annual Notice of Change arrives, you do not have to read it alone or rush a decision. A local SFG advisor will sit down with you, in person or by phone, and read it with you, line by line, if that is helpful.

Save this post for when your letter arrives, so you remember you do not have to figure it out alone.

October 1 is a meaningful date on the Medicare calendar, but it's easy to misread what it means.

What changes: Insurance companies are permitted to begin sharing approved 2027 plan information, like updated benefits, costs, and coverage details.

What does not change: Medicare Open Enrollment does not start until October 15. You cannot enroll in or switch a plan on October 1.

Between now and then, we will be reviewing the approved information as it becomes available so we can share it with you accurately.

If you are helping a parent or loved one get ready for Medicare's fall review, here is the most important first step: ask.

Ask if they would like help. Ask what they are comfortable sharing. Ask before you make a call or fill out a form on their behalf.

A few ways to help without taking over:
1. Offer to organize paperwork together, not for them
2. Write down questions in their own words
4. Sit in on a call only if they want you there
5. Let them make the final decision, even if you see it differently

Getting ready for a coverage review is easier when everything is in one place. Here's what to gather ahead of time:

• Your current coverage, including your plan name and ID card
• A list of your current prescriptions
• Your preferred pharmacy
• Your doctors and specialists
• Any care or travel changes from this past year
• Questions you've been meaning to ask

Keep it in a folder, a notebook, or even a notes app, whatever works for you. When you're ready to talk it through, we're happy to walk through it with you.
