What happens when the provider is right and the auditor is wrong?

It happens.

Sometimes we become so confident in a rule that we stop asking an important question: Where did that rule actually come from?

Is it published guidance? A payer policy? An internal organizational policy? Or is it an interpretation that has been repeated so many times that it eventually started being treated like regulation?

As auditors, our job isn’t to win the disagreement. It’s to follow the strongest available guidance and apply it objectively.

And sometimes, when we go back to the source, we may find that the provider had a defensible position all along.

Changing an audit conclusion when the evidence supports it isn’t a weakness. It’s good auditing.

The strongest auditors are confident enough to reach a conclusion—but objective enough to change it when the evidence says they should.
