On World Hospice and Palliative Care Day, we're highlighting the important role hospice and palliative care play in helping patients and families navigate serious illness.

Both hospice and palliative care focus on comfort, quality of life and support, helping patients receive care that aligns with their goals and wishes. Palliative care can begin at diagnosis and alongside treatment. Hospice care is typically chosen when treatment is no longer working or a patient decides to stop curative treatment for a terminal illness, shifting the focus to comfort, quality of life and support for both the patient and their loved ones.

Happy Friday friends.

Here's a Staff Spotlight with chaplain Misheck.

Enjoy our Q&A. 💚

💚 What did you want to be when you were growing up?
"Growing up, since I was little I wanted to own an auto mechanic shop and hire people. Looking back, I’m grateful for the journey that led me into ministry and the opportunity to serve others."

💚 What drew you to becoming a chaplain?
"Since God called me into ministry as a pastor/minister, I have a heart for walking alongside people during difficult times. Chaplaincy gives me the opportunity to offer a listening ear, comfort, and spiritual support when patients and families need it most. I’ve been a chaplain for 2 years before Amedisys and joined the Amedisys family September 2, 2025."

💚 What do you wish more people understood about a Hospice Chaplain?
"I wish more people understood how much of our work involves listening and being present. We support people of different faiths, as well as those with no religious affiliation, honoring their beliefs and wishes. (For example, a patient may be afraid of dying or worried about the family they will leave behind. A chaplain can give them space to express those feelings, reflect on what matters most, and find comfort through conversation, prayer if requested, or simply quiet companionship. Sometimes, the most meaningful thing we offer is helping someone feel heard and less alone.)"

💚 What’s a passion of your outside your Chaplaincy role?
I have 3 Main Important areas of passion:

1) Spending time with my beautiful and lovey wife with our 2 little ones.

2) woodworking…ooh boy I love it so much can do it even 1:00am.

3) Taking care for orphans back in Malawi Africa by providing meals, education and spiritual support. Having grown up in Malawi, this ministry is close to my heart

💚 What makes you laugh a lot?
When I hear my beautiful 5 and 3 old kids say things like they are 13 and 10yrs old. Secondly; When my wife and I remember a joke of 2008 when I met her first in Malawi which I said, “YOU ARE SHORT LIKE A BUCKET”

As you can see, Misheck is a lot of fun, has a heart for people and the world, and understands the heart of being a chaplain. We're blessed to have him as part of our incredible chaplain team.

My dad was diagnosed with lung cancer and underwent treatment for 18 months. I still remember the day he called to tell me his doctor had said there was nothing else she could do and he should consider hospice.

This was in 2009 and was my first time interacting with that 'word' (hospice) in a personal and super scary way. I didn't know what that meant for my dad, or for me, my mom and the rest of our family.

Let me just say ~ I'm so glad my dad chose hospice. Looking back, his time on hospice was some of the most memorable, meaningful (and calmest) months of his journey. That was in January 0f 2009.

Dad died in June of 2009 with me and my mom by his side. He was home, in his recliner, in front of the tv, and at peace.

A week later I was privileged to lead his celebration of life service and saw so many come out to honor, remember and reflect on his life. Many there had come to see him during those six months on hospice and I sensed that their grief, their loss, and their sadness was comforted due to the fact they got time to come to the home, visit with him and say their goodbyes.

As you might imagine, this was a profound experience for me and my entire family. Little did we know that our mom would then be on hospice less than three years later and, although it was a much shorter time for her, it was just as meaningful and memorable.

I work in hospice now. Little did I know back then what a profound impact my hospice journey with my family would have on me.

Thank you to all who work in hospice... on the frontlines, behind the scenes, supporting, comforting, caring both patients and their loved ones. I was a recipient and now I'm so happy to be part of the hospice team.
