Medical Monday Update 💉🩺

It’s been a while since we’ve updated everyone on what’s been going on with Niki, so here’s the latest.

Since late April, she’s been going back and forth between a women’s specialist and oncology team due to bleeding issues caused by Tamoxifen. Since June 1, she hasn’t had any Tamoxifen which is what blocks estrogen, and is what was fueling her cancer.
The new plan is to switch from Tamoxifen to Exemestane, along with an additional injection that will completely suppress ovarian function and place her into medical menopause. She will also continue receiving her long-term Phesgo injections, which they believe is doing an excellent job at keeping the cancer away!
So, instead of moving forward with a hysterectomy, the team has decided that surgery will be a last resort & even has another plan on standby if needed!
Because Exemestane can cause bone thinning over time, she’ll have a bone density scan to establish a baseline so her doctors can monitor her bone health moving forward.
The only downside from today’s visit is that her bloodwork still shows she’s anemic, so that’s something we’ll continue working on.

Overall, we’re thankful for another treatment option that offers even better long-term odds of remission while allowing us to avoid surgery for now.
As always, thank you to everyone who continues to pray, check in, and support us. It means more than you’ll ever know. 💗🎗️

Another shot in the books💉

After a sit down with Dr. Briggs today, we learned that my platelets are “clumping” together, so additional blood work is in the works.
This coming Thursday I go in for another Echocardiogram to check on the ol’ ticker.

It may not seem like much to some, but every little bit of growth feels like progress after chemo. Some days I miss my old hair pretty bad and other days I’m proud that it’s even growing.

Some days survivorship feels inspiring.
Some days it feels exhausting.
Both can be true at the same time.

Healing doesn’t always look perfect, productive, or positive. Sometimes just making it through the week is enough.🩷🎗️

Thankful Thursday / Cancer Journey Update💕🎗️

After continued issues with her port, Niki had a procedure yesterday to hopefully resolve the problem. She was placed under light sedation while Dr. Nelson examined the port. In the end, the port was adjusted and the tubing connecting it to her artery was shortened slightly. It appears that once everything settled, the tubing may have been a bit too long.
She’s definitely feeling sore and in some pain today, but we’re hopeful this adjustment will make a big difference in her day-to-day comfort moving forward. Thank you all for the continued support and prayers, it truly means more than we can put into words.

Cancer journey update 💗

On April 8th, Niki had another PET scan, and today sat down with the doctor — everything is still looking clear! The treatments and medication are continuing to work in her favor, and for that we are so incredibly grateful!

Even with that amazing news, Niki hasn’t quite found her “normal” yet. Her body stays pretty tired, and her port is still giving a bit of a fight. Along with her shot, she received some fluids to try to help her body & get some numbers up. But she is pushing through every single day.

A special thank you to Aunt Marlina for the beautiful (and delicious!) breast cancer ribbon cookies — they meant more than you know 💕

Still alive. Still fighting. 💪🏻💗

Update: Niki is still getting her shot & blood work every 3weeks. Her next PET scan is scheduled for April 8. We have high hopes for another set of clear scans! Still fighting💪🏻

Meanwhile, Niki wants everyone to know a few things to look out for that can lead to cancer exposure.

“None of us can control everything, but small choices add up. Sharing this in hopes it helps someone else pay attention to the little things that might actually be big things. 💗🎗️

Cancer changes the way you look at a lot of things — including the everyday products we use.
Because of my breast cancer being environmental exposure, we started paying closer attention to what’s in lotions, shampoos, perfumes, and household products. Many contain chemicals that researchers suggest limiting because of possible links to hormone disruption and cancer risk.

A tool that has helped a lot throughout this journey is an app I use every time we go to the store: “Yuka”
It has a free & paid version. You would be surprised at the things you are putting on or in your body!

Download it & scan some of your daily used items. Better yet, scan your kids daily used items. It’s just plain scary. (Anything Old Spice: ❌)”

National Cancer Day from Niki 🩷
(Slightly delayed due to sleep)

“I am so grateful for every day I have, and for the strength I didn’t know I had. Even though the chemo shot fights against the growth, my hair is getting there!
Today, I celebrate those who fought before me, stand with those going through it now, & being there for anyone in the future.”
