Feeding evaluations never stop for a feeding therapist. I think I have identified 3 children with possible tongue ties based on their eating skills, compensated eating patterns for 2 adults, and picky eating that is a problem for a 1 year old. And I’m just sitting in the corner minding my own business over lunch.

Chewing on fingers is a behavior we try to redirect to something more appropriate like an oral tool, but keep in mind that a child may refuse the chewing tool because it’s the sensation on the finger that the child craves not the need to chew that situation is a tougher problem to tackle!

Trials of food with strictly tube fed children is possible so don’t give up! Please be trained and know the risks before starting, ensure safety for the child, and seek out a therapist with experience. feeding

Pacifier talk!
Even if a pacifier package says “orthodontic” it is harmful to a child’s jaw and teeth with prolonged use. Packaging can lead parents to assume it is ok for up to age 3 if there’s a product for their child’s age. Don’t fall for the marketing! This little one now has an open bite limiting her ability for feeding skills and speech clarity. Pacifiers are not needed after the age of 6-7 months and should be weaned by 12 months.

SHE PASSED HER MBS STUDY! This Little can now take all liquids by mouth rather than through her feeding tube! She had silent aspiration in her last swallow study in December. Oromyofunctional therapy was used to make great gains in her tolerance. Isn’t this the best news all week?!?!

Parents! Follow your instincts and ask for an evaluation if you have concerns. Feeding therapy can begin with newborns. Speech and language can begin at 6 months if your child is not making cooing sounds. You are not a helicopter parent if you ask questions. The wait and see approach is no longer supported.

This must be discussed ✨🌟💫 because the longer you wait the worse it will get. Constipation can affect a child in so many ways and once the body is cleared, it can take UP TO A YEAR to return to a normal functioning system. Talk to your doctor for a feeding referral in your area.
