OCTOBER 19–23 | INTERESTS & TALENTS
What are we curious about?

When we spend much of our lives in survival mode, our focus is often on getting through the day. We're so busy managing challenges, meeting immediate needs, and figuring out what's next that we don't always have the time, energy, or opportunity to discover what interests us or what we're good at.

Over time, we can lose touch with the parts of ourselves that exist beyond our struggles. We may forget what we enjoy, what makes us curious, or what we're capable of.

Our interests, talents, and potential don't disappear just because life has been difficult. Sometimes we just need the opportunity to rediscover them.

This week at The La Crosse Lighthouse, we'll explore our interests, hobbies, curiosity, and talents—both those we already recognize and those we haven't discovered yet.

Building a life beyond survival isn't just about learning how to manage challenges. It's also about discovering who we are, what we enjoy, and what makes life meaningful to us.

Why we’re creating something new at the La Crosse Lighthouse

Over the past five years, we’ve learned a lot by listening to the people who walk through our doors.

Our respite program was created to meet a real need, but ultimately, the cost of providing respite in that way wasn’t sustainable. As we looked at what came next, we didn’t just ask, “What program can we afford to offer?” We asked a different question:

“What are people actually needing?”

Again and again, we saw something bigger.

Many of us were never taught how to do life outside of survival mode.

When we struggle with mental health challenges or substance use, getting help can sometimes mean giving up pieces of ourselves along the way. Decisions get made for us. Our choices become defined by our struggles. We learn how to survive, but sometimes lose connection with who we are in the process.

Over time, autonomy can become something we have to relearn.

So we decided to create something different.

A space where lived experience matters. A space where people can learn about themselves, discover their strengths, build skills, explore their dreams, and begin to see themselves as more than the worst moments or choices in their past.

Because we are more.

We have skills.
We have dreams.
We have strengths.
We have creativity.
We have the ability to grow and be successful.

And who better to walk alongside us in that process than people who understand what it’s like?

At the La Crosse Lighthouse, we know that people are more than the things they have been judged for. We see the person beyond the diagnosis, the substance use, the mistakes, the crisis, or the past.

This new program is about creating a place where we can discover what comes next together.

Not another place that tells people who they should be.

A place where we can learn, grow, reconnect with ourselves, and create a new way forward together.

Recovery isn't just about leaving something behind. It's about discovering who you are and what you can become.

This week, “Our Lives, Our Choices: What Makes a Good Life for Us?”, is all about exploring what matters to you — your values, choices, priorities, goals, and the things that help make life meaningful.

Join us for conversation, activities, reflection, peer connection, and practical opportunities to think about the life you want and steps you can take toward it.

Come for one session, come for several, or join us throughout the week — participate at your own pace. No need to attend every day or every session.

Help us get the word out!

The La Crosse Lighthouse is entering an exciting new chapter!

We are evolving our program offerings to better meet the needs of individuals experiencing mental health, substance use, and other life-interrupting challenges.

Overnight respite services will end on September 25, 2026. Our new Day Support program will begin October 5, 2026, and will be available Monday–Friday with programs at 9 AM • 11 AM • 1 PM

Our new Day Support program will focus on creating structured, peer-centered opportunities for individuals to:

✨ Identify and build on their strengths

✨ Develop self-efficacy and recovery skills

✨ Increase independence and confidence

✨ Build ownership and accountability around personal goals, choices, and next steps

✨ Understand and advocate for their rights

✨ Build meaningful connections within their community

✨ Explore recovery, wellness, and personal goals alongside peers with lived experience

✨ Develop the skills and confidence to navigate challenges and solve problems for themselves

Day Support will include planned groups, workshops, presentations, and other activities that provide opportunities for learning, growth, recovery, and connection.

This is a structured program, but participants do not need to spend the entire day at The La Crosse Lighthouse to participate. Individuals can choose the activities and opportunities that best fit their interests, goals, needs, and availability.

We believe that people are more than the challenges they experience. We believe in the power of peer support, lived experience, connection, choice, recovery, and self-determination.

This isn't just a change in programming, it's an opportunity to strengthen what The La Crosse Lighthouse offers and create a space where people can come together, discover their strengths, build skills, take ownership of their goals, and take meaningful steps toward the lives they want to live.

We are excited about this new direction and the possibilities ahead!

Last Friday night was the one-year anniversary at Oh Oh Coffee, and they held a pop-up Sober Bar event to celebrate! We’re incredibly grateful that they chose The La Crosse Lighthouse to receive the proceeds from the evening.

The turnout was great, the mocktails were excellent, and it was a wonderful opportunity to increase awareness of The La Crosse Lighthouse in the community. The night was made possible by volunteers donating their time and local businesses and organizations donating the mocktails and desserts.

Thank you to everyone who helped make it such a successful night, and congratulations to Oh Oh Coffee on one year!

We would like to take a moment to extend our heartfelt condolences to our Peer Partners at Wisconsin Milkweed Alliance - WIMA and the team at Monarch House Peer Run Respite on the loss of an incredible man.

When The La Crosse Lighthouse was navigating transitions in 2022, Dan never hesitated to offer his support, kindness, and expertise. His generosity and dedication to others made a lasting impact on our organization and so many throughout the peer support community.

Dan was a truly remarkable person whose compassion and commitment touched countless lives. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and everyone at WIMA and Monarch House during this difficult time.

Thank you for your time on this planet, Dan.

Daniel was born on October 17th, 1985 and passed away on June 28th, 2026 at the age of 40
