💙This one’s for the dads! 💙

This study had a rather small sample size, but it found that when Dad did skin to skin after delivery via c-section, there were improved outcomes for breastfeeding (time to initiate, feeding behaviors at the breast and LATCH scores).

This is why we discuss the support person’s role in breastfeeding during our prenatal consultations— Dads matter too!

I love Amber, you love Amber, we ALL love Amber! 💗

Today Amber was surprised at work when she was named the “Babies First” award winner, nominated by FOUR colleagues for her exceptional work as both an RN and an IBCLC in the NICU. Amber was recognized for her endless support of moms and babies working on breastfeeding during their NICU stay as well as her contributions to the hospital’s lactation program.

So deserved !!! 🏆 🥇

Post-partum breast cancer is unfortunately on the rise. While we surely don’t want to create anxiety, we do want to raise awareness.

At 4 years post-partum, I found a lump. I was 38, no family history of breast cancer. But it was cancer. I was in shock. I spent the next 6 months having surgery, chemo and radiation and still take medications daily, 4 years later, to prevent recurrence. I was too young for annual mammograms so if I hadn’t been doing self exams and recognized that something was different in my body, who knows how long that lump would have gone unnoticed.

A year or so after my diagnosis, Amber went for her first mammogram, 6 years post-partum. Again, shockingly, her mammogram came back abnormal with early stage cancer identified. If Amber hadn’t been diligent in getting her first mammogram on time, it could have gone undiagnosed and not been caught as early as it was.

Know your body. Advocate for yourself. Get screened. 💗🫶🏻🎀

Moms often fear their baby is fussy because of their milk and as often as we tell them it’s very unlikely, the proof is in the (research) pudding!

First off, it’s important to know the definition of colic: 3+ hours of crying, 3+ days/ week for 3+ weeks. There’s a lot we still don’t know about colic, including what exactly causes it.

Here’s what we do know, thanks to this study:

🟡 Colic is less likely in infants who were exclusively breastfed vs those who were mixed fed (breastmilk and formula).

🟡 Instances of colic were also lower for those infants who received formula during the first week and then went on to receive exclusive breastmilk.

🟡 Colic peaked between 7-9 weeks and was typically gone after 12 weeks.

Colic is draining, but temporary. 👊🏻🫶🏻

✨ Breastmilk is magical ✨

This study had a small sample size, but did show that babies in the breast milk + zinc oxide group had faster diaper rash resolution than those using zinc oxide alone.

Next time baby has a raw bum 🍑 , give breastmilk a try with the zinc oxide!

Fun little afternoon of delivering some goodies to a few of our local pediatrician practices to say thanks for the collaboration! It’s so important to have open lines of interdisciplinary communication for our babies and their families and we are grateful to have some great local partnerships!
