Peptides are everywhere in conversations about longevity, recovery, body composition, and performance. But promising doesn’t always mean proven.
I recently listened to Dr. Gabrielle Lyon’s podcast episode, “DON’T Inject What You Can’t Verify: Compounded Peptide Safety Explained,” and wanted to share a few key takeaways.
Not all peptides belong in the same category. Some peptide-based medications are FDA-approved and supported by substantial human research. Others are investigational, while some promoted for healing and recovery have very limited human data.
One example Dr. Lyon discusses is BPC-157. Although hundreds of papers have been published, most of the research is preclinical. Human evidence remains extremely limited.
That doesn’t mean these compounds have no potential. It means a promising mechanism is not the same as proven effectiveness in humans.
Before considering a peptide, ask:
What is the level of human evidence?
What outcome did the study actually measure?
Where is the product coming from?
If you’re a tested athlete, is it prohibited in your sport?
Most importantly, don’t let the newest longevity intervention distract you from the fundamentals:
Strength training.
Adequate protein.
Cardiovascular fitness.
Consistent movement.
Quality sleep and recovery.
