Lafayette - Be careful out there this week.

With all this rain and stormy weather, I wanted to share a quick safety reminder.

Please be careful on wet steps, slick sidewalks, driveways, porches, and parking lots this week.

Slips, awkward steps, and sudden movements can sometimes lead to aches, strains, or injuries that may affect areas like the back, knee, hip, shoulder, or ankle.

A few simple precautions may help reduce your risk:

👉 Wear shoes with good grip.

👉 Slow down and watch your step when walking outside.

👉 Use handrails when they're available.

👉 Avoid carrying too much at once.

👉 Be careful when stepping from wet grass onto concrete, tile, or other slick surfaces.

And if you do slip, twist something, or notice pain that doesn’t improve, you’re always welcome to reach out and see if physical therapy may be appropriate.

Please be careful out there.

For me, physical therapy has always been personal.

By the time someone walks through my door, they’re often not just dealing with pain. They may be dealing with frustration. Uncertainty. A change in what they’re able to do day to day.

Maybe they’ve had to step back from something they enjoy. Maybe they’re wondering what the path forward looks like.

I’ve been there. I know what it feels like to have acute discomfort, to feel limited, and to want clear answers about what comes next.

That’s why it matters so much to me that the people I work with never feel rushed, brushed off, or treated like just another appointment on the schedule.

I want them to understand what we’re working on, why we’re taking certain steps, and how their treatment plan is designed to support their progress.

Because physical therapy isn’t just about treating an injury. It’s about helping people work toward moving better, feeling more confident, and getting back to the parts of life that matter to them.

So when someone leaves a review like this, it means a lot to me.

It's exactly why I do this.

WHY DOES IT HURT?
#5: The Damp Weather Joint Pain Myth

Storms are currently pounding Greater Lafayette.

And if your knees, shoulders, or lower back feel a little more achy today, you’re likely not the only one.

For generations, people have said they can “feel the rain in their bones.” It sounds like an old myth, but there may be some truth to it.

Every person is different, and weather is only one possible factor. But some research and clinical observations suggest that changes in weather may influence how certain joints feel. Your joints respond to movement, activity, stress, and sometimes changes in the environment around you.

When heavy storms move in, barometric pressure - the weight of the air around us - can drop. In some cases, that change may affect pressure inside or around sensitive joint tissues.

For many people, this doesn't cause noticeable symptoms.

But if an area already has stiffness, reduced mobility, arthritis, scar tissue, or a previous injury, stormy weather may make that area feel more noticeable.

That does not mean the weather created a new injury. It may simply be one possible trigger that draws attention to an area that was already sensitive.

So, if your body seems to complain when the rain rolls in, it may be worth paying attention.

Rainy-day aches can also sometimes be a helpful reminder to notice how your body moves, recovers, and responds to daily activity.

You can't control the weather outside, but with the right guidance, you may be able to work on mobility, strength, movement quality, and overall tissue health.

At Restore Physical Therapy & Wellness, a FREE assessment may help identify factors that could be contributing to your discomfort. From there, care recommendations are based on your individual needs and goals.

WHY DOES IT HURT?
#4: Do I Need Physical Therapy If The Pain Comes And Goes?

Pain that disappears for a few days can be frustrating. It makes it hard to understand what's actually going on.

👉 One day your knee or back feels completely fine.
👉 The next week, you notice discomfort just getting out of your car.
👉 It is easy to blame the weather, a hard workout, or just a bad day.

And sure, those everyday factors can certainly play a role.

But if your discomfort keeps disappearing only to return a few weeks later, it may be time to look for a pattern.

Why?

Because pain that comes and goes may mean your body is finding a way to tolerate a movement flaw for a little while. But eventually, your body can reach a tipping point. The temporary absence of pain doesn't necessarily mean the root cause is gone.

> Walking normally until a sudden twist triggers that old ache again.
> Feeling great all weekend, then getting tight at your desk on Monday.
> Trying to push through your workout until a familiar tension returns.
> Assuming an issue is fully resolved just because it stopped hurting while you rested.

Over time, letting a cyclical issue go unaddressed can add up. It may contribute to:

> Sudden flare-ups during daily tasks you expect to be easy
> Subtly changing how you walk, sit, or lift to avoid the discomfort
> Modifying or skipping your workouts out of fear that you will trigger it again
> Noticing that your comfortable, symptom-free windows are getting shorter
> Relying too often on short-term relief options like ice or heat packs
> Feeling hesitant or anxious when planning weekend trips or family activities
> Extra strain on other joints and muscles that have to overcompensate
> An issue that becomes more stubborn and takes longer to address down the road

Discomfort that fluctuates like this should be something worth paying attention to.

You don't need to stress out over it. However, intermittent symptoms can sometimes mask a deeper movement dysfunction that persists even when you're not actively hurting.

A few good questions to consider asking yourself are:

👉 How many times has this same type of discomfort returned over the past year?
👉 Does it seem to flare up after the exact same types of activities?
👉 Are you changing your daily movements just to keep the tension away?
👉 Do you find yourself avoiding certain positions even on your "good" days?
👉 Does the intensity of these flare-ups seem to be shifting over time?
👉 Does the discomfort go away only when you stop being active completely?
👉 Are you waiting for a major physical setback before deciding to have it looked at?

In Lafayette, many active adults fall into the "it feels fine today" trap. They often wait until a minor, recurring ache becomes a major issue in their daily routine.

So if your discomfort keeps playing peek-a-boo, consider looking a little deeper. Don't just blow it off and assume it's completely fixed because it stopped throbbing yesterday.

At Restore Physical Therapy & Wellness, my focus is on looking at how your body moves as a whole system. This can help us identify the patterns, habits, and imbalances that may be causing your symptoms to cycle on and off.

That way, nothing is based on mere guesswork. It's based on how you move, your history, and what your body shows during a comprehensive physical evaluation.

My goal is to provide you with a clearer path toward moving better, building lasting stability, and helping you feel more confident in your body throughout the week.

WHY DOES IT HURT?
#3 The “Short Fuse” Pain Symptom

We often think of physical pain as something that only stays in our joints or muscles.

But the truth is, constant physical discomfort doesn't always affect only your body. It may also drain your energy, reduce your mental bandwidth, shorten your patience, and change how you interact with the people you love.

When you're constantly dealing with background physical discomfort, your emotional fuse can feel shorter.

Irritability and a lack of patience can be frustrating because it doesn't always feel like there's one clear reason for it.

> Maybe you had a stressful day at work.
> Maybe you didn't sleep well last night.
> Maybe you blame a busy schedule, family chaos, or just being stretched too thin.

And sure, those things can matter.

But if you find yourself snapping at your partner, spouse, or kids by dinner time, it may be worth looking for a physical pattern.

Why?

Because constant, low-level physical pain can act like background noise in your brain, quietly draining your energy and making it harder to stay patient over the course of the day.

> Pushing through a nagging lower back ache.
> Ignoring constant, dull shoulder tightness.
> Dealing with neck discomfort every time you sit down.
> Trying to stay active when your body keeps asking for relief.

Over time, carrying that physical burden around can add up and may lead to:

👉 Feeling drained of patience by the end of the day
👉 Snapping over minor household things that normally would not bother you
👉 Watching your spouse carry more of the physical load because your body is flaring up
👉 Checking out of family activities or playing with the kids at Moncus Park
👉 Feeling isolated because you don't want to keep talking about how you feel
👉 Emotional exhaustion that feels like career or life burnout
👉 Noticing your mood improves when your physical discomfort eases
👉 A tight, guarded, or anxious feeling by the end of the day

A “short fuse” linked to physical discomfort is worth paying attention to.

Not because you need to panic. But because repeated physical pain may affect how you communicate, how you respond to your family, and how you show up at home.

A few good questions to ask yourself are:

👉 When does your patience or mood usually start to wear thin?
👉 Is it worse on days when your physical aches are more noticeable?
👉 Do you find yourself withdrawing from your partner because of how your body feels?
👉 Is pain making everyday tasks at home feel harder than they should?
👉 Do you feel frustrated by how often you have to say, “I can’t, my back hurts”?
👉 Does your mood improve even slightly when your physical tension eases up?
👉 Does movement or changing positions help restore a little bit of your mental bandwidth?

In Lafayette, many hard-working adults spend their days balancing career demands, family life, and physical discomfort they simply try to push through.

So if a constant ache is starting to affect your home life, your mood, or your relationships, don’t just write it off as stress or assume you are becoming an impatient person.

At Restore Physical Therapy and Wellness, I help patients look at how hidden physical pain, movement restrictions, and daily habits may be affecting their body, their mood, and their patience at home.

That way, the plan isn't based on guesswork. It's based on how you move, what you're feeling, and what is found during the evaluation.

The goal is to help you move better, feel more comfortable, and get back to being the patient, present version of yourself for the people who matter most.

WHY DOES IT HURT?
#2: Neck Pain From Screen Time or Driving

Neck pain can be frustrating because it doesn’t always feel like there’s one clear reason for it.

> Maybe you slept wrong.
> Maybe you turned your head too fast.
> Maybe you blame stress, age, or that pillow you keep meaning to replace.

And sure, those things can matter.

But if your neck pain keeps showing up after screen time or driving, it may be worth looking for the pattern.

Why?

Because your neck doesn’t just respond to one awkward moment. It responds to what your body does over and over again.

> Looking down at your phone.
> Sitting at a computer.
> Holding the steering wheel.
> Keeping your head in one position during a long drive.

Over time, those repeated positions can add up and may lead to:

👉 Stiffness after scrolling or computer work
👉 Pain after long drives
👉 Tightness into your shoulders
👉 Trouble turning your head comfortably
👉 Headaches that seem to follow neck tension
👉 Pain that feels better when you move
👉 Symptoms that return after sitting still again
👉 A tight or guarded feeling by the end of the day

Neck pain like this is worth paying attention to.

Not because you need to panic.

But because repeated discomfort can slowly change how you move, sleep, work, drive, and go through your day.

A few good questions to ask yourself are:

👉 When does the pain usually show up?
👉 Is it worse after phone, tablet, or computer use?
👉 Does driving make it more noticeable?
👉 Is it harder to turn your head one way?
👉 Do your shoulders tighten up too?
👉 Do headaches seem to follow the neck tension?
👉 Does movement help, even for a little while?

✅ In Lafayette, many people spend hours checking their phones, driving, working at computers, or sitting in positions their necks don’t particularly love.

So if your neck pain keeps coming back, don’t just ignore it or assume it’s “just part of getting older.”

At Restore Physical Therapy & Wellness, I help patients look at how their neck, shoulders, posture, strength, and movement habits may be contributing to what they’re feeling.

That way, the plan isn’t based on guesswork. It’s based on how you move, what you’re feeling, and what your body shows during the evaluation.

The goal is to help you move better, feel more confident, and get back closer to the life you enjoy.

WHY DOES IT HURT?

#1: Back Pain That Comes and Goes
Random pain may have a pattern.

Back pain that comes and goes can be easy to dismiss. Especially if it settles down for a few days.

But when the same pain keeps returning, it may be worth asking whether there’s a pattern behind it.

> Does it show up after sitting too long?

> After lifting something?

> After sleeping in a certain position?

> After a long walk, a workout, a long drive, or a stressful week?

Pain can feel random when you’re only noticing when it hurts. But sometimes, the pattern becomes clearer when you look at what happened before it came back.

A few good questions to ask are:

👉 What were you doing before the pain returned?

👉 Does it happen more after sitting, bending, lifting, walking, or exercising?

👉 Does it feel better with movement, rest, heat, or changing positions?

👉 Have you started avoiding certain movements because you’re worried it will come back?

✅ You don’t need to panic. But you also don’t need to keep guessing.

If back pain keeps coming and going, a proper physical therapy assessment can help you better understand what may be contributing to it.

Random pain may have a pattern.

Want to Improve Your Golf Game?
Start With Your Body, Not Your Clubs.

A lot of golfers in Lafayette think the answer to a better game is a new driver, new irons, or another swing lesson.

And sure, equipment matters.

But as we get older, the issue isn’t always the club.

Sometimes, it’s the body swinging it.

If your hips feel tight, your back feels stiff, your shoulders don’t rotate like they used to, or your balance feels a little less steady than it once did, your swing may have to work around those limits.

That can sometimes show up as:

👉 Less distance off the tee
👉 A shorter backswing
👉 A restricted follow-through
👉 More soreness after a round
👉 Trouble staying balanced through the swing
👉 Inconsistent shots that feel hard to explain

That’s where physical therapy may help.

A physical therapist can evaluate how your body moves as a system. Not just one sore spot, but how your hips, spine, shoulders, core, and balance work together during movement and rotation.

For older golfers, that can be important.

✅ Improved hip mobility may help you rotate more comfortably through your swing.

✅ Better mid-back movement may make your backswing feel less restricted.

✅ Improved core strength may help support better control when shifting your weight.

✅ Better balance may help you feel more steady from setup to follow-through.

And when your body moves more comfortably, your swing may feel less forced.

This doesn’t mean physical therapy will turn you into a scratch golfer overnight.

It also doesn’t mean every ache, pain, or swing issue has the same cause.

But physical therapy may help you better understand what physical limitations could be affecting your comfort, movement, and confidence on the course.

So whether you’re playing at The Wetlands, Jay & Lionel Hebert Municipal Golf Course, Les Vieux Chenes, or just trying to get through 18 without your back talking to you by the back nine, it may be worth asking a different question:

Is it really your swing that’s the problem? Or could your body be making your swing work harder than it needs to?

Before you buy another club hoping it’ll shave a few strokes off your handicap, start with the one piece of equipment you bring to every round...

⭐ Your body.

If you feel that pain, stiffness, balance, or limited mobility may be affecting your golf game, Dr. Thibodeaux at Restore Physical Therapy & Wellness can help you better understand what may be contributing to the issue and what options may be appropriate for you.

To schedule a FREE consultation, call 337-446-7918 to speak directly with Dr. Thibodeaux.

Or for more information, visit restorept.net.

Because sometimes, a better round starts before you ever step onto the first tee.
