Helping our little ones gain the confidence to stand without holding on can be a tall order sometimes!
If you’re currently working toward independent standing, this is one of my favorite activities!
It allows baby to practice standing hands free while still having the security of support behind them. 🙌🏼
At first, it might look a little messy! They may lean back heavily, wobble, or only last a few seconds, and that’s okay!
As they get stronger and more confident, you can progress the activity by:
✨ Encouraging them to stand a little taller
✨ Increasing how long they stay in the position
✨ Encouraging them to reach farther forward
Start with the toy or book close enough that baby can reach it while still keeping their body against the support behind them.
Then, as they improve, slowly move it farther away!
As baby reaches forward, they begin shifting their weight away from the support behind them and accepting more of their own body weight for independent standing.
Eventually, you’re looking for those tiny moments where they leave the support completely, even if it’s only for a split second!
Those little split seconds of independent balance add up and help baby build the strength, balance, and most importantly, the confidence they need to stand independently! 🤍
