HOW DO WE KNOW THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN WHAT’S REAL AND WHAT’S IMAGINED?

I was feeling anxious about something recently and I stopped and asked myself:
“Am I anxious…or am I excited?”

Because the thing is, our body can respond to something we’re imagining in much the same way it responds to something that’s actually happening.

Your heart races.
Your palms sweat.
Your stomach flips.
Your energy increases.

Your body doesn’t necessarily know: “This is real” or “This is something I’m imagining might happen.”

It just responds and that’s where things get really interesting. Sometimes in stuck in a loop.

Sometimes anxiety and excitement can feel identical physiologically.

The difference can be how we interpret and label what we’re feeling.

“I’m anxious. Something bad might happen” vs “I’m excited. Something is about to happen, and I don’t know what it is yet.”

Same physiological response. Different meaning. Different experience.

We have to become aware enough to have the ability to flip the script.

Not by pretending the anxiety or feeling isn’t real, but by stopping long enough to ask what is it?

Because sometimes the only thing we know for sure is that something is happening in our body.

Can we stay curious with the feeling instead of assuming the meaning we have always given it?

That’s where we have the power.

In this short clip from the podcast, mind-body conversations with Lisa and Elizabeth I discussed how the mind-body connection shows up and how we can challenge those uncomfortable emotions.

Here is a short clip from our Mind-Body Conversations podcast on anger. Anger isn’t the problem. Unprocessed anger is.

When we don’t deal with our anger, it doesn’t just affect us. It can spill into our relationships, our marriages, and especially our children.

If you learned that being “perfect” kept you safe, you may have learned to scan everyone else’s emotions before expressing your own. So you stay quiet. You accommodate. You swallow the anger 😡even when your feelings, needs or opinions are completely valid.

You don’t have to be perfect to be safe anymore.

You’re allowed to have feelings. You’re allowed to have boundaries. And you’re allowed to be angry without it always being a diagnosis 🥺and it’s responsible to understand and acknowledge the anger so you can move it and elevate to a higher level. It hasn’t aired yet, but you can watch on YouTube or listen on Apple and Spotify podcasts!

Boundaries are important, but often they aren’t used properly. You have to be clear what you are asking and you have to be prepared to follow through on your end. It’s not just about getting someone to do something, it’s about knowing what you will or will not tolerate and being ready to choose what’s best for you regardless of whether the other person respects your request or not. This is harder than most people think it is. When you truly respect yourself and your needs this gets easier. There is no guilt, there is no negotiation, there is no justification. It just is.

I’ve been saying this for years so this is great I don’t have to create a new post and can just share this one … normal is not the same as optimal! Preaching to the choir, but happy to see this becoming more common practice

A symptom tells us what you’re experiencing. Anxiety, fatigue, pain, insomnia—these are signals. They’re your body communicating that something is happening.

A diagnosis is a clinical label that describes a specific pattern that meets certain criteria.

The tricky part is that sometimes we stop at the label. We say ‘this is anxiety’ and forget to ask: why is this happening? What factors are contributing? What is the body trying to tell us?

The goal isn’t to dismiss diagnoses. The goal is to understand the whole picture—the mind, the body and everything influencing your health.

For many people, psychiatric medications can be life changing. They can provide relief, improve daily functioning and help people feel more like themselves again.

What happens when you’ve tried medication after medication and you’re still struggling?

Sometimes the answer isn’t simply trying another prescription.

Medication doesn’t work in isolation. Your brain and body need the right environment to support healing and balance.

Factors that may influence how well medication works can include:

🧬 Genetics and how your body metabolizes medications
🧪 Vitamin and mineral deficiencies
🍽️ Blood sugar regulation
🦋 Thyroid function and hormonal transitions
🌿 Gut health and chronic inflammation
⚡ Cellular energy and mitochondrial function
😴 Sleep, stress, and nervous system regulation

This doesn’t mean medication isn’t helpful. In fact, medication can be an incredibly important part of treatment.

It means we may need to look at the whole picture.

I believe mental health is more than symptoms alone. Understanding the connection between your brain, body, and unique biology allows us to create a more personalized approach to care.

Sometimes your brain is missing the support it needs to function at its best.

The goal isn’t just to find a medication that works…
The goal is to understand you!

People say they want to heal, but sometimes healing isn’t about adding more things. Often, it’s about releasing and that can be more difficult, but also much more powerful ✨
