Your friendly neighborhood doula may be more educated & experienced than you think 😊 ask all the questions. Not only are doulas certified as maternal care support partners and in birth education, but they also can be knowledgeable in areas such as:

✨Community resources

💫Newborn care

💫Health systems

💫Parenting

💫Overall maternal wellness

Doulas are a well of knowledge and are trained to collaborate with nurses, doctors, and other medical staff to best serve you in a way that gives you greater understanding, wisdom, and the ability to self advocate.

💫I wish I could say I was making up each of these harmful scenarios but they are very real and I have plenty more. Only two of the positive examples have I witnessed. And the truth is it’s not going to be doulas who change this. It will be patients who are educated and bold enough to hold providers accountable. But first you have to be able to recognize when

✨Your rights are being violated

✨You’re being talked down to or lectured

✨You’re being treated with an abrasive or vulgar attitude

✨You’re being coerced

✨You’re being dismissed

✨You’re being rushed

💫If you experience such things you have the ability to file a grievance, which is a formal complaint to the hospital or their oversight agency such as The Joint Commission. Every health facility allows their patients the ability to do so via their website or over the phone. All you need is the date, the provider name, and to disclose the scenario; the more details the better. This can be done anonymously and free from retaliation. It’s no longer enough to only make a Facebook post in private groups or on a public page or to whisper in secrecy to our neighbors our bad experiences. If change is what is desired patients must be bold, professional, & strategic to be effective.

Faith is a way of life with a distinct set of beliefs, customs, traditions, values, and art rooted in the Holy Bible & Spirit of Jesus. It’s important that as providers we meet such women with respect, empathy, and curiosity; not judgement and frustration or labeling them as difficult, ignorant, or delusional.
