In Tarot, The Hanged Man personifies the energies of surrender and perspective. Let’s dive in …
Imagine a time when you were gripping on to, or really striving for something. The more you wanted, the tighter you held on. The heart, ached and calculated your next press towards this thing or outcome. The mind frustrated and burning to discover a solution to no avail.
Now imagine the energy of hanging upside down on the monkey bars at the playground. Arms freely falling open towards the Earth in surrender. The heart open to receive. You open your eyes to see a whole new perspective. Things are upside down (or rather, you are) and a whole new world of possibility opens up into awareness here. Suddenly the answers, solutions, and remedies come flooding in with abundance. That’s the “aha moment” when it all becomes clear!
Yoga offers this opportunity to practice this surrender on the mat. We let go of the striving and the pressing to find acceptance of what we feel in the body. Maybe pain, stiffness, tight areas. Rather than pushing, we lean in to acceptance and even love. We soften to what is.
Our perspective is literally challenged when we practice inversions. It takes a moment, or two, to orient ourselves to our new perspective. Once we acclimate, we see the world still exists, but within it consists an entirely new point of view.
Maybe all we needed was to dangle upside down to see the world differently, even if it were for a minute. Maybe we just need a moment to breathe, notice, surrender, and allow the wisdom to sink in. Because the answers are already there. We just have to be able to see it with new eyes.
Best,
Antonia
