A Question Worth Asking. Was This Always There?

One of the most helpful questions I ask when someone wonders if they have ADHD is surprisingly simple:

“Was this always there?”

True developmental ADHD typically shows up early.

But many of the people I meet tell a different story.

They were focused.

Driven.

Organized.

Capable.

Then somewhere along the way, things changed.

Years of responsibility.

Pressure.

Loss.

Health challenges.

Overwork.

Life.

Suddenly their brain doesn’t feel like it works the way it once did.

That’s why I believe the conversation has to be bigger than simply asking:

“Do I have ADHD?”

Sometimes the more important question is:

“What has my brain been carrying?”

I wrote more about that here:

The Brain Doesn't Get To Sit Life Out

One reality for all of us is:

The brain doesn’t get to sit any of life out.

Not the stress.

Not the losses.

Not the responsibilities.

Not the trauma.

Not the sleepless nights.

Not the caregiving.

Not the years of pushing forward.

It’s there for all of it.

Which means that over time, even highly capable people can begin noticing things like:

• Focus taking more effort

• Memory feeling less reliable

• Mental stamina declining

• Feeling like they’re working harder for the same output

That doesn’t automatically mean ADHD.

Sometimes it means the brain is getting tired from having carried the demands of a lifetime.

It’s one of the ideas I explore more deeply here:

Is It Really ADHD, Or Is Your Brain Stuck in Survival Mode?

After more than 20 years working with brains and nervous systems, I found myself quietly asking that very question about my own brain.

As some of you have seen me share, I’ve intentionally staged the expansion of my work around the life stages of my son.

For years, there was more I wanted to write, teach, and share from both my personal experiences and more than 20 years of working with brains and nervous systems. But I also knew that capacity is finite, and being present for my son’s childhood was the most important responsibility I would ever have.

Now that he’s stepping into adulthood, I’m finding more space to write.

One topic keeps showing up.

People calling.

People emailing.

People searching.

People asking:

“I think I have ADHD.”

Sometimes they do.

But after more than 20 years working with brains, I’ve learned that what looks like ADHD isn’t always ADHD.

That observation led me to write this article:

Stressful environments train the brain into tension.

Even when things change, the pattern stays.

Neurofeedback helps your brain unlearn the old environment’s imprint.

Less residue. More repair.

What looks like ADHD is often an overloaded nervous system — or a brain that’s never been given what it actually needs.
