Have you heard? Before it was a Cadillac, the inspiration was a bed.
According to the commonly told Pilates origin story, Joseph Pilates attached springs to hospital beds so patients could exercise while supported—a concept that helped shape the apparatus we use today.
Sources:
• The Smithsonian’s Universal Reformer entry recounts the story of Pilates using springs from beds to exercise bedridden wounded soldiers. (si.edu)
• Joseph Pilates’s 1927 “Gymnastic apparatus” patent, U.S. 1,621,477, provides primary documentation of his apparatus design. (patents.google.com)
Biographer Javier Pérez Pont identifies historical films demonstrating the Bednasium and promotional material advertising it. Photographer I. C. Rapoport also photographed Joseph Pilates demonstrating it on October 4, 1961.
* Its relationship to the Cadillac: Pérez Pont places Pilates’s exercise beds within the Cadillac’s development. Grootenhuis also reports that a Cadillac Joseph built for Carola Trier originally had a Bednasium as its lower frame.
Based on these sources, the hospital-bed connection is best described as “widely repeated” as noted in the caption, but Joseph Pilates use of it to rehab patients or soldiers is not 100% verifiable.
