You don't expect to be exposed to toxic levels of lead when you walk into a retail store. Neither do you expect find harmful levels of lead in an off-brands, let alone name brand handbags, jewelry or other accessories.

According to a report issued this week by the non-profit watchdog group, Center for Environmental Health (CEH), two popular retailers, Ross and Burlington, are selling multiple brands of accessory products that exceed 300 parts per million, surpassing the Consumer Products Safety Commission's safety threshold of 100 ppm for children's products.

The CEH's report detailed their investigation spanning 13 years, primarily in California. In 2010 and 2011 the organization leveraged California’s Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act (Prop 65), to negotiate legal settlements with approximately 200 firms to reduce the amount of lead in their leather and faux leather accessories to comply with safety regulations. Their recent investigations focused on Ross and Burlington who they cited as particularly unresponsive.

New Study Indicates Arsenic in Food, May Cause Mental Disorders

Arsenic found in baby food in popular brands such as Ge**er and Beechnut has recently been highly publicized in the media. Now, another new animal study implicates arsenic in causing mental disorders.

For baby food and food manufacturers, this new study enlarges their legal exposure, in addition to raising the stakes for food safety and regulatory oversight.

The presence of arsenic in baby food is especially troubling given the vulnerability of infants and toddlers. At this critical stage of development, their bodies are less capable of processing and eliminating toxins, making them more susceptible to the adverse effects of arsenic.

Arsenic, a naturally occurring element found in water, air, and soil, has long been recognized for its toxicity and potential to cause cancer. However, recent animal studies have expanded our understanding of arsenic's harmful effects, suggesting a link between arsenic exposure and the development of mental disorders, including conditions that mirror anxiety and autism spectrum disorders. These findings point to a more complex and distressing picture of arsenic's impact on health, particularly in young children.
