It produces myokines, signaling molecules that regulate inflammation, brain function, and immune response. When muscle mass declines, the body loses its most powerful buffer against chronic disease. Type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cognitive decline, and metabolic syndrome do not develop in a vacuum. They develop in a body that has been under-muscled for years while medicine measured everything except the thing that mattered most.

Unhealthy muscle is the root cause of disease. We have the research. We have the mechanisms. What we have been missing is the clinical priority. Protein sufficiency and resistance training are not supplemental recommendations. They are foundational medicine. The conversation needs to catch up to the physiology.

We are not over-fat. We are under-muscled.
