Ever wondered why different cannabis varieties can smell so different? 🌿

A big part of the answer is terpenes.

Terpenes are aromatic compounds found throughout the plant kingdom, including in cannabis. Beyond their aroma, researchers are interested in their potential biological effects and whether they interact with cannabinoids such as THC and C*D.

That's where the popular idea of the entourage effect comes from—the hypothesis that cannabis compounds may work together to modify or enhance one another's effects.

It's an interesting area of research, but there's an important catch:

The entourage effect has not been conclusively established as a predictable clinical phenomenon in humans.

There's still a lot to learn about how cannabinoids, terpenes and other compounds interact.

THC and C*D aren't the only cannabinoids found in cannabis. 🌿

Researchers are increasingly studying lesser-known compounds such as CBG, CBN and CBC—often referred to as minor cannabinoids.

You may already see products making claims about CBN for sleep, CBG for inflammation, or other potential benefits.

But there's an important distinction between something being scientifically interesting and something being clinically proven.

Compared with THC and C*D, human research on many minor cannabinoids remains limited.

That's what makes this an exciting area of cannabis science—but also one where it's especially important not to get ahead of the evidence.

Cannabis and PTSD are often discussed together—but what does the research actually tell us? 🌿

Some people with PTSD report using cannabis to help manage symptoms such as sleep difficulties or anxiety. However, individual experiences and clinical evidence aren't the same thing.

At this point, controlled research has not established cannabis as an effective treatment for PTSD itself, and more high-quality studies are needed.

That doesn't mean the conversation should be ignored. It means patients deserve accurate information about what we know, what we don't know, and which PTSD treatments currently have stronger evidence behind them.

Chronic pain is one of the most common reasons people become interested in medical cannabis—but what does the research actually show? 🩺🌿

The answer is more nuanced than you might think.

Recent reviews of clinical trials suggest that some THC-containing cannabinoid products may provide small, short-term reductions in chronic pain, particularly for certain types of neuropathic pain.

But potential benefits need to be weighed against possible side effects, including dizziness, sedation and nausea. We also know much less about the effects of long-term use.

Most importantly, chronic pain isn't one single condition, and cannabis products can differ considerably in their cannabinoid content and effects.

👉 Swipe through for a closer look at what current research tells us.

If you're living with chronic pain and wondering whether medical cannabis may be appropriate for you, speak with a qualified healthcare professional about your individual situation.

Did you know your body produces its own cannabinoid-like molecules? 🧠🌿

They're called endocannabinoids, and they're part of a biological signaling network known as the endocannabinoid system (ECS).

The ECS includes endocannabinoids, cannabinoid receptors such as CB1 and CB2, and the enzymes responsible for producing and breaking these compounds down.

This system participates in processes involving pain, appetite, memory, mood, immune function and more.

Plant-derived cannabinoids such as THC can interact with parts of this system—which helps explain why cannabis can have effects throughout the body.

THC and C*D both come from cannabis—but they aren't interchangeable. 🌿

THC is primarily responsible for the intoxicating effects associated with cannabis, while C*D doesn't produce the same "high" and interacts with the body differently.

Their effects can also depend on dose, how they're consumed, the ratio between different cannabinoids, and the individual patient.

And they're only two of more than 100 cannabinoids that have been identified in cannabis.

What exactly is a cannabinoid? 🌿

Cannabinoids are a group of compounds found in the cannabis plant—and THC and C*D are only the beginning.

More than 100 cannabinoids have been identified, including lesser-known compounds such as CBG, CBN, and CBC.

What makes them particularly interesting is how differently they can interact with the human body. Some of those effects involve our own endocannabinoid system, while others involve additional biological pathways researchers are still working to understand.

And while THC and C*D have been studied extensively, the science behind many minor cannabinoids is still developing.

What actually makes cannabis medicinal? 🌿

The answer is more complicated than simply "THC" or "C*D."

Cannabis contains more than 80 biologically active compounds, including a group known as cannabinoids. THC and C*D are the best known, but researchers continue to study how other compounds in the plant interact with the human body and what therapeutic roles they may have.

Importantly, the evidence isn't the same for every condition. Some uses of cannabis and cannabinoids are supported by stronger clinical evidence, while many others are still being researched.

That's why this month we're going beyond the basics.

We'll be exploring cannabinoids, THC vs. C*D, the endocannabinoid system, and what current research tells us about some of the potential medical applications of cannabis.
