CALL FOR ARTISTS: MAKING ROOM

WovenSmart Gallery is now accepting submissions for MAKING ROOM, our fall 2026 exhibition.

MAKING ROOM explores what becomes possible when space is opened, claimed, shared or reconsidered. The exhibition considers room in both physical and less visible forms: room for change, complexity, rest, expression, belonging and new ways of seeing.

Artists are invited to interpret the theme broadly. Work may explore presence and absence, boundaries and transitions, expansion and restraint, overlooked spaces, or the act of welcoming something that has not yet fully arrived.

The exhibition is open to original, wall-hung artwork in a range of media. Artists may submit from outside Northeast Ohio, but accepted work must be delivered to and picked up from WovenSmart Gallery in Lakewood.

Submission deadline: Sunday, September 13, 2026 at 11:59 PM ET
Opening reception: Thursday, October 15, 2026

A capable team can still be working inside conditions that make good attention difficult. Common signs include too many simultaneous priorities, meetings that create more residue than clarity, decisions scattered across channels, constant switching and no protected time to think before responding. These patterns are often treated as personal productivity failures. They may be design problems instead.

Our new article offers five signs to look for, questions leaders can use and a practical first step that does not require another platform or program.

We often talk about attention as if it were entirely an individual responsibility.

Focus better. Manage distractions. Become more productive.

But attention is also shaped by the environment around us. Organizations influence it through the priorities they set, the meetings they schedule, the messages they send, the decisions they postpone and the time they allow people to recover.

WovenSmart’s Architecture of Attention looks at four connected parts:

Demands: What is asking for attention?

Conditions: What supports or disrupts sustained attention?

Choices: Who determines what matters now?

Recovery: Where can people regain perspective?

The question is not only, “How can people focus better?” It is also, “What have we designed that makes attention harder than it needs to be?”

Where do you see attention being supported or depleted in your work or everyday life?

Creativity does not always begin by making something. Sometimes it begins by noticing what has been there all along.

Try this three-minute practice:

Pause where you are and identify three details you had not consciously noticed.

Choose one. Describe it without deciding whether it is attractive, useful or important.

Then ask: What does this make me curious about?

Write down the first question that appears.

The practice is small, but it interrupts automatic seeing. Save it for a day when your thinking feels narrow or overly familiar.

What did you notice?

Art spaces ask something different of our attention.

They invite us to slow down, look again and stay with something before deciding what it means. A shift in light, the space between two works or a detail that initially seemed unimportant can change what we notice.

That kind of attention is useful beyond the gallery. It creates room for observation before judgment, curiosity before certainty and perspectives we may miss when we move too quickly.

The Space Between is currently on view at WovenSmart through October 1. If you would like to visit the gallery, send us a message to arrange a time.

What helps you slow down enough to notice differently?

WovenSmart can be difficult to place in one familiar category.

It is a strategic advisory practice, a studio, a gallery and a setting for workshops, retreats and conversations. These are not separate ideas placed under one name. They respond to the same problem from different directions.

People and organizations often become fragmented. Brand says one thing while culture rewards another. Teams move quickly but lose perspective. Experiences are scheduled without enough thought about how people will actually feel, participate or remember them.

WovenSmart brings strategy, creativity, attention, environment and human experience together. Sometimes the work is a brand or marketing engagement. Sometimes it is a facilitated leadership session. Sometimes art, a room or a shared question creates the opening.

The format changes. The purpose is consistent: helping people and organizations see more clearly, reconnect what has drifted apart and create conditions for better work and fuller lives.

What part of WovenSmart are you most curious to experience?

Stop in today or tomorrow- we’ll be open from 12-3 both days.

Overwhelm has a way of making everything feel equally important. The unfinished task, the conversation we need to have, the email that just arrived and the decision we have been postponing all compete for the same amount of attention.

When that happens, most of us try to push harder. We make another list, move faster or try to force an answer. But clarity does not always respond to pressure. Sometimes it appears when we create enough space to see what is actually happening.

That is one of the ideas behind The Space Between, our current exhibition at WovenSmart. The work explores the tension between overwhelm and clarity, fragmentation and focus, exhaustion and renewal. Watching people move through the gallery has reminded me that pausing is not the same as doing nothing. A pause can help us notice what we have been missing and decide what deserves our attention next.

I would love to know: what helps you find your way back to clarity?

One of my favorite comments from Opening Night was:
"I didn't expect an art exhibition to make me slow down."

That simple sentence perfectly captured what we hoped to create.

In a world that constantly asks us to move faster, consume more, and divide our attention, perhaps one of the greatest gifts we can offer one another is a space to pause.

That's what 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗕𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗻 is about.
Not having all the answers. Simply making room to notice.

The exhibition remains on view through 𝗦𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟭𝟱, and whether you joined us for Opening Night or have yet to visit, I hope you'll take some time to experience it.

I'd love to leave you with one question:
𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗳𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 "𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗻" 𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗹𝘆?

I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments.
