In ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi, there's a phrase, "Ka wai ola," which translates to the waters of life. Wai (freshwater) is life's most essential resource, and its importance is seen and heard throughout Hawaiian culture and language.

On our home of Lāna‘i, there are no lakes, rivers, or waterfalls. We rely on the pine trees to capture the water droplets from the dense fog and passing clouds. We rely on the fresh rain that falls on Lāna‘i Hale, which eventually flows into our underground aquifer. This ground water is our lifeblood. It's the water that sustains our community, and it's the water that gives life to our plants.

At Sensei Farms, water is a resource we will never take for granted. Ka wai ola is the consistent life in all of us. Because if there's no water, then none of us are really living.

The cost of food globally is rising. According to the Food and Agriculture Association’s Food Price Index, March 2021 marked the 10th month in a row that food prices increased worldwide with vegetable oils and dairy products leading this increase. With rising food prices, the ability to feed one’s family a healthy, affordable meal is all the more challenging. At Sensei Ag we are pioneering ways to grow nutritious, delicious produce more efficiently and sustainably, thus reducing our input costs and ultimately the cost to the consumer. In order to feed our planet, we must find innovative ways to grow produce that are less labor intensive while also more consistent volume of product. Indoor cultivation that leverages technologies such as AI, robotics, computer vision and more will and has made it possible to grow affordably no matter the form factor or climate. As a result, indoor farming will one day make it possible and affordable for all individuals to feed their families nutritionally-relevant meals.

Every year on May 6 the world celebrates International No Diet Day, a day dedicated to promoting a healthy lifestyle and body acceptance. On No Diet Day, we worry less about weight, shape or size and focus more on facilitating a healthy, active lifestyle full of delicious and nutritious food choices. Sensei Ag is committed to promoting health and wellness through food. We celebrate taste and texture, enjoy our calories, albeit nutritious ones, and promote a combination of physical and mental wellbeing as the key to a long, productive life. Much research shows that those who diet in spurts, end up losing weight but putting back on almost all of it within 5 years. Why not eat healthy but tasty foods always! Visit our brand website, Sensei Farms for some great recipes in honor of today’s No Diet Day. There’s a great recipe for taco salad if you didn’t get enough yesterday for Cinco de Mayo!

Did you know that food systems account for more than one-third of global greenhouse gas emissions? A recent study produced by the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) in collaboration with researchers at the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre in Italy introduced a new database called EDGAR-FOOD. This database tracks GHG emissions by country all the way back to 1990 and also enables detailed tracking of future trends. According to the FAO, EDGAR-FOOD “represents a milestone for understanding how the global food system has developed.” At Sensei Ag, we too believe in the importance of data and analytics in shaping our understanding of global food systems. Efforts like EDGAR-FOOD which capture data in a systematic way and make that data available to all are essential to the agricultural industry’s advancement. Through data and analytics we can redesign how our food is grown and bring healthy, delicious affordable food options across the globe.
