Hi, friends 🌸 There’s some new faces here so a little reintroduction is overdue!

I’m Dr. Sheridan, occupational therapist and IBCLC, and the owner of Bloom Therapy Co. Bloom is a specialized infant therapy practice right here in Central Ohio offering occupational therapy, feeding therapy, and gentle bodywork that targets the fascia and releases tension so that your baby can eat, sleep, move, and feel more comfortable in their body.

We work with babies and their families from those very first newborn days all the way through walking. Caring for a new little one is amazing, but it also comes with unique challenges. No one really prepares you for the physical and emotional ups and downs that come with a new baby and the support most families are handed just isn’t enough. We are here to give you real answers and genuine encouragement along the way.

That can look like:

Crawling is so much more than just a way for your baby to get from point A to point B.

It is actually a complex neurological workout. When your baby moves opposite arms and legs together in a coordinated rhythm, the left and right hemispheres of their brain are talking to each other. This cross-body movement builds the neural superhighway that they will later use for reading, writing, and coordinated play.

Physically, crawling acts like a natural alignment tool. Pushing off the ground builds the deep stability in their shoulders, develops the arches of their hands for future pencil grip, and stretches out the deep fascial tissue in their hips and spine.

Every time they crawl, they are mapping their world and learning how their body fits into space.

Leaving your baby's tongue tie appointment with more questions than answers is incredibly common. It usually means the evaluation looked at anatomy, not at how your baby actually feeds.

A tie is only a clinical issue if it limits how your baby moves their mouth to breastfeed, bottle feed, or swallow comfortably. Lifting the lip or peeking under the tongue doesn't tell the whole story.

You are always allowed to advocate for your baby. A few questions you have every right to ask:

🌿 How is this tissue actually affecting my baby's ability to feed?
🌿 Can we get a full functional assessment of sucking and swallowing, not just a visual check?
🌿 Can we try pre-frenectomy therapy first to address muscle tension before deciding on a release?
🌿 What will our post-release therapy and oral motor plan look like for proper healing?

At Bloom, we use gentle bodywork and oral motor therapy to address full-body tension first. Sometimes that alone resolves feeding struggles, no procedure needed 🌱

If you feel rushed or dismissed, you have full permission to pause and seek a second opinion. You deserve a care team that looks at your whole baby 💛

Your baby was born already knowing how to find the breast or bottle. That instinct isn't luck. It's wiring that started forming months before birth.

Five oral reflexes do the heavy lifting in those early feeds, each on its own developmental timeline:

Rooting: turning toward a touch on the cheek to find the ni**le.

Sucking: the rhythmic draw that pulls milk and keeps a feed going.

Gaping: that wide-open mouth that sets up a deep, comfortable latch.

Tongue extension: reaching forward to seal around the breast or bottle.

Tongue lateralization: side-to-side movement that builds coordination for milk now and solids later.

When feeding is going well, you can trust that built-in navigation system. When something feels off (long feeds, clicking, a shallow latch, popping on and off), those same reflexes give us clues about what your baby needs.

We hear all the time from parents that their baby "hates" tummy time. They don't innately hate it - usually there is a fascial restriction in the body that makes lying prone genuinely uncomfortable.

Once we address the underlying tension, babies can tolerate and even enjoy tummy time in no time.

Consistent crying during tummy time is often your baby's body communicating something specific. It can point to muscle tightness, asymmetry, fascial restriction, or a retained reflex.

The answer isn't always more tummy time. Sometimes it's figuring out why prone feels hard, then layering tummy time back in once the body is ready.

The early weeks can feel like a puzzle. The arching during feeds, the head that always turns the same way, the latch that just won't click. Most of what looks like "fussy" is actually your baby's body telling you something specific.

A tight neck can make one side of feeding feel impossible. A subtle oral restriction can turn a long feed into a shallow, exhausting one. Reflexes that aren't fully firing or haven't properly integrated can make the important milestones feel out of reach. None of it means you're doing anything wrong.

When you understand what's happening underneath, the daily moments start to make sense. And small, gentle shifts often go a long way 🌱

That little flat spot on the back of your baby's head? It's usually not a head problem to begin with. It's a neck problem, and maybe even a full body problem.

Plagiocephaly (flat head shape) and torticollis (a tight, preferred head turn) almost always travel together, and most families don't hear the full story until the easiest correction window has already started to close.

Three things parents tell us they wish they'd known sooner:

🌱 Why the neck is usually where correction actually begins
🌱 What the "correction window" really is, and why six weeks looks very different from six months
🌱 Why a helmet isn't the only path. Repositioning, hands-on bodywork, and specific exercises can correct mild to moderate cases, especially when started early

Two families came to us with the same concern: their baby's head tilted to one side. One waited six months. One came in at six weeks.

The outcomes were very different. Not from one parent caring more, but because timing matters more than most people realize.

"Wait and see" can be the right call for minor, isolated concerns with no functional impact and a clear monitoring plan from your pediatrician.

For conditions like torticollis (tight neck muscles), plagiocephaly (flat spots on the head), feeding difficulties, and oral ties, the window for easiest correction is narrow. A baby's neuroplasticity and rapid growth are working in your favor in those early months. Waiting doesn't pause that window. It shrinks it.

A script for your next visit if you're unsure: "I hear you that this may resolve on its own. Can we also get a referral to an infant OT or feeding specialist so we have support in place if it doesn't?" You're allowed to do both. Monitor AND get a specialist's eyes on your baby.

You know your baby best. Trust that 🌱

Newborn feeding is run by a set of automatic reflexes, wired-in patterns that show up at specific weeks of gestation and fade on a predictable schedule. A shallow latch, a weak suck, a small gape. Often, those are neurological patterns, not failures.

Here are some questions we want you to feel completely free to ask us, or any provider your baby sees:

"Can you explain what you just did and why?"
"What does a typical plan of care look like for my baby?"
"Can you walk me through what you found in the evaluation?"
"What should progress look like, and what signs should I be watching for at home?"
"What would you do differently if this isn't working in two weeks?"
"I need you to slow down. Can you explain that again?"

None of these are off-limits. They make you a parent who is paying attention. The best therapy happens when you are a true partner in the room, not a polite observer.
